REEBOK ALL AMERICAM CAMP UPDATE II

July 9, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment

It was a busy day on the Philadelphia University campus with the Reebok All-American camp getting in full swing. College coaches made their way into Philly and the players tried their best to impress and earn a future scholarship.

Here are some additional news and notes from today’s action gathered by Jeff Borzello and Matt Whitfield. Look for MUCH more tomorrow as the pair have gotten acclimated to their surroundings and familiar with the talent on hand.

Here are today’s final notes…

- Thomas Jefferson (NYC) High School point guard Davontay Grace, a member of the class of 2011, is a popular name among Big East circles. Grace told NBE that Providence, Villanova, West Virginia, St. John’s, Marquette and Virginia Tech are currently recruiting him.

Grace visited Villanova during the season, Marquette for a recent elite camp, Providence for the Jamfest back in April and has also been to West Virginia and St. John’s.

“I like it, I like it alot,” said Grace of his trip to WVU as he indicated a couple of his coaches attended WVU and he is very highly interested in the Mountaineers, who have not offered him a scholarship, but they are showing him strong interest.

- Memphis (TN) White Station HS point guard Joe Jackson had an impressive performance. Jackson is a high scoring point guard that also has a strong handling ability and made effortless, good-looking passes throughout the contest. Jackson was the best point guard on the floor and prospect in his game.

Jackson told NBE that his phone is “ringing off the hook” with college coaches of late and that Memphis, Tennessee, Connecticut, Kentucky, Kansas, Marquette, Indiana, Oklahoma and Duke were the schools putting in the most effort.

As for the Big East, Jackson said it was a “good conference, up there with the ACC.” The Big East could factor in his decision as Jackson told NBE that he “he wants to be where the players [are] at.”

At the recent NBA Top 100 camp, Jackson had also told NBE that Syracuse and Texas were also schools he would consider using official visits to see.

- Class of 2011 big man LeBryan Nash out of Texas showed in an earlier contest he is one of the top players in the camp.

- Victor Oladipo, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who attends DeMatha in Hyattsville (MD), told NBE he has in the proximity of 30 offers from schools big and small. Some of those offers have come from Indiana, Clemson, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Providence, Xavier, Dayton, UMass, VCU and Cincinnati. He also indicated he is expecting an offer from Pittsburgh very soon and he has been to Georgetown.

- The majority of the Rutgers coaching staff was very visible for a game featuring several prime Big East targets including Sterling Gibbs, Derrick Wilson, Derrick Randall, J.J. Moore and Jabari Hinds.

In the game, Gibbs showed off an improved handle and played like the best point guard on the floor. Wilson, who is quite a football prospect as well, was definitely the most physical point guard in the camp and Moore showed why he is a rising wing prospect as he shot and finished well throughout.

Gibbs’ list also seems to be getting a little longer as he mentioned schools such as DePaul, Indiana, Seton Hall, Rutgers, St. John’s, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and Villanova in one form or another in the recruiting process.

Everyone still seems to be chasing ‘Nova, who he visited just prior to playing with USA Basketball’s U-16 team, which won a gold overseas.

- Derrick Randall mentioned that Georgetown is a recent entrant into his recruitment. The Jersey big man also continues to list Virginia Tech, St. John’s, DePaul, Providence, Villanova and Miami.

- Jerelle Reischel gave NBE a school list that included Penn State, Maryland, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Providence and West Virginia. He could take some visits in August.

- Matt Whitfield learned that newly hired Florida International head coach Isaiah Thomas is expected to be at the camp on Wednesday, which is certain to draw media attention. It looks like Thomas has already made a mark on the camp as Mt. Zion big man Chris Coleman, a native of Buffalo (NY), has made a verbal commitment to FIU. Coleman was going to be a player many coaches checked out in Philly.
