ADIDAS IT TAKES 5IVE WRAP-UP

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Adidas it Takes 5ive came to a conclusion on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of the University of Cincinnati as the champions were crowned on the court. It was an exciting three days of basketball and many college coaches came through the Queen City to get an early start at looking at the talent with the start of the July evaluation period.

Even with many coaches leaving town to head to destinations such as Cleveland and Philadelphia Tuesday night, several were left tracking some of their top prospects and to make a statement of their interest in the players performing on Wednesday.

Here are a few news and notes from the final day in Cincinnati as relayed by Doug Ferguson…

The action on Wednesday morning started out very early with the 16-U Platinum bracket quarterfinals. Immediately noticed a Georgetown assistant laying eyes on the Team Philly vs. Indiana Elite One match-up. 6-foot-9 Cody Zeller of Washington (IN) and 6-foot-11 Marshall Plumlee of the Arden (NC) Christ School have kept the attention of AAU coaches throughout the week.

Indiana Elite One continued their march with a quarterfinal win over their counterparts from Philly. They advanced and will meet Triple Threat who has been led by Deon Andrews, a guard out of St. Mary’s-Ryken in DC, this week.

The 16-U Derek Smith All-Stars made it into the quarterfinals led by Remy Abell and George Fant. Earlier in the week Louisville head coach Rick Pitino paid the local team some attention.

43 Hoops out of Minnesota reached the semifinals with a win over KC Pump-N-Run that is for the ages. 43 Hoops nailed what looked to be a winning halfcourt shot, but their coach was granted a time out before the ball was launched. Then, in the ensuing in-bounds play after the timeout, 43 Hoops scored on a Laettner-esque 17-footer after it was tipped back.

Notre Dame had an assistant staying back here in Cincy and was present watching verbal commitment Eric Atkins and his DC Assault teammates. This was their tournament as DC Assault got past Double Pump (CA) in the semi’s 81-61 with Ced Lindsay and Josh Hairston each scoring 15.

Hairston would score 19 and Daryl Trayham would drop 14 dimes as DC Assault cruised to the 17-U Platinum crown at the 2009 Adidas it Takes 5ive championship over Indiana Elite by 25 points.

Oscar Robertston, the ‘Big O’ himself, came by the Fifth Third Arena to check out some of the action on the court named after him.

Notre Dame had an assistant back for Indiana Elite One’s 67-64 semifinal victory in the 16-U Platinum bracket semifinal win over Triple Threat. Deon Andrews had another 22 for the fellas from DC.

Marshall Plumlee, who has two older brothers at Duke, scored 17 and Cody Zeller, who had a brother just finish at ND and another currently at North Carolina, scored 16 as IN Elite One moved on to meet 43 Hoops (MN) in the finale. Zeller told NBE following the game that he has offers from Indiana, Butler, Iowa and Purdue while Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida and North Carolina continue to show heavy interest.
