This was like the Ringling Bros and Zambelli Fireworks combined for a show in the Wolstein Center on the Cleveland State University campus this afternoon.
That explosive show was led by Illinois-commit Crandall Head, who dropped the nastiest dimes to his open teammates, including a behind the back pass while in the air and through his legs to an open cutter in Terrence Jones, who dropped the layup. It’s rare to talk about a kid that will not be playing in the Big East, but Head, like his talented brother Luther, is an obvious exception, with his amazing awareness, great hustle and ability to get above the rim.
Reggie Smith also helped contribute a lot to the impressive show put on by both teams. He showed off the long range arsenal early, connecting on his first three 3-pointers of the day. Smith twisted his left ankle and limped off the court, but returned about 10 minutes later, and just in time, as his first possession back in, the 6-1, 175 lb guard acted like a big man, pulling down a huge rebound and putting it back up for the and-1 fadeaway jumper. He did great work on the boards for the majority of the game, and showed great hustle and heart despite his injury.
Syracuse-commit Dion Waiters got back to his old ways late in the game, after struggling for much of the first half. A great drive to the lane, using a nice crossover set him afire for the final five minutes, where he would drop some crucial long range shots. He impressed most with a strong post up behind basket turnaround move and reverse layup finish on baseline late in the game.
Justin Anderson showed some very nice ball-handling and passing skills. One, in particular, when Justin had a fantastic with a behind the back pass to Carlton Brundage who finished with the and-1 reverse layup off the baseline. He is a finesse player with great charisma on the floor.
Tony Mitchell made a couple strong plays to note, including a strong hook shot that forced an and-1 attempt. He muscled up in the paint a good bit and really showed his creating abilities on a couple nice passes and shots.
Michael Gilchrist (6-6, 216 lbs) looked more like a point guard then anything today, making great decisions, including a couple solid passes and very nice drives to the lane, that usually resulted in a jam. Gilchrist had one of the quicker releases in this game for a wing, and his post up moves were overall, top notch.
Tobias Harris (6-8, 210 lbs) is a guy that almost always can be depended on for a great show. His big moment came in the second half when a huge and-1 jam had Georgetown head coach John Thompson III and Ben Howland, among others, nodding their heads in approval. Harris’ hustle was the most important part of his game today. He missed a few shots, but was almost always on his own offensive rebound and finishing. He made some great drives to the lane and fantastic post up moves as well.
Trey Zeigler brings that old school touch to the game, looking like his old man a few times with some nice sky hook looks and turnaround jumpers. He drove the lane with authority a few times and jammed home one drive, in which he evaded three players in a row to soar for the bucket. Zeigler is one of the best driving guards that can avoid traffic in the country, and he showed that multiple times today.
Bakari Turner didn’t make much noise, but his great recovery and quickness helped him find a few baskets and assists.
Carlton Brundage showed a great stutter step one way and fooled his defender, then drove the other side for the easy layup. Also displayed a great fake pass and drive to the lane to draw the foul. He can be rather reckless on drives at times. Seems it’s either a turnover or great play for the basket.
Ray McCallum is one of the few guys in this tournament that can hardly score any points and still be one of the biggest factors on the court. He hardly scored, but he kept the offense flowing with his quick passes and his vocal leadership. What is so great about McCallum is that he always has his head up court looking to make a play before the defense is even turned around.
DaJuan Coleman (6-8, 281 lbs) is easily the biggest kid in this tournament. He showed an authority on the glass. Missed some easy layups, but kept getting a chance to finish, as nobody could get near him on the boards. He has DeJuan Blair-esque hands, which helped him catch almost any pass thrown his way. He does a good job at drawing fouls as well, but he needs to finish.
Tobi Oyedeji: showed great hustle on the boards and proved to be a strong finisher when he had the chance. Alas, he didn’t receive too many touches in this game.
Wayne Blackshear (6-5, 205 lbs) impressed me on a few fadeaway jumpers from long-range. But much like Oyedeji, his touches were limited.
Terrence Jones (6-8, 219 lbs) may be one of the more athletic kids here. He showed off his vertical, getting extremely high on two offensive putback dunks early on, and blocking several shots on the other end. Very nice athleticism and quickness from Jones.
