July 8, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
The Adidas it Takes 5ive rolls on Tuesday evening as the 64-team bracket for the Platinum championship will be down to just four teams in the 17-U division when the games are finished.
Doug Ferguson is putting in his second long day in Cincinnati and has several updates for NBE readers as not all the coaches have left town just yet for destinations such as Cleveland and Philadelphia for tomorrow’s recruiting efforts.
Let’s see what Doug has for us tonight…there will also be an update when the brackets are set for tomorrow…
Update:
Here are the match-ups for Wednesday:
17-U Platinum Bracket Semifinals:
DC Assault vs. CA Pump N Run
Grassroots Canada vs. IN Elite – Fox
16-U Platinum Bracket Quarterfinals:
IN Elite vs. Derek Smith AS
KC Pump n Run vs. 43 Hoops (MN)
Team Philly cs. IN Elite 1
All-Ohio Red vs. Triple Threat
Jon Horford and the Michigan Mustangs had a good run before a tough loss in the quarterfinals to Grassroots Canada. Horford told NBE following their loss that he currently has a top five listing of Michigan State, Florida, Alabama, Wake Forest and Miami. Tom Izzo was certainly very noticeable at their games.

J.D. Weatherspoon tells NBE that he is still wide open after the 2010 forward withdrew a verbal commitment from Xavier after Sean Miller left for Arizona. Weatherspoon is still considering the Musketeers and they, along with Ohio State, are showing him the most attention. Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin was watching Weatherspoon today and J.D. tells NBE that the Bearcats have called recently.
The Indiana Elite 16′s had coaches from Notre Dame and South Florida watching intently.
In addition to Mick Cronin, a Connecticut assistant was watching a 16-U game between All-Ohio Red vs. Ohio Basketball Club.
The Michigan Mustangs continue to draw a crowd as the entire staffs present from Louisville and Providence were there to take in the action.
The early evening match-up between D1E and the Florida Rams drew another big crowd. D1E effectively used a 2-3 zone that surrounded Fabricio de Melo and held the big Brazilian to just 5 points in the 69-65 win for D1E.
Josh Langford plays with Melo on the Rams and is 100% committed to Louisville.
Ryan Boatright and Justin Martin had nice efforts offensively for D1E in the win.
In the stands for the game was Rick Pitino and two of his Louisville assistants, Jim Boeheim with his heir apparent Mike Hopkins of Syracuse, John Thompson III who is reportedly trying to get Georgetown into the Melo race. Assistants from Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Connecticut were also noticed scanning the crowd.
