Louisville, Seton Hall offering Mount Vernon’s Hinds

By Zach Smart

Jabari Hinds has come into his own this summer.

The cat-quick, we first guard is currently among the top-ranked player in all of New York in his class.

Hinds, a highly sought after product on the recruiting market, has already received offers from Louisville and Seton Hall University.

“Those are offers that are on the table,” said Terry Teachout, the true shot doctor of Section I-NYS basketball.

“I heard it right from the horse’s mouth.”

Teachout, who authored a storied career at Duquesne University and had tryouts with the Cleveland Cavs before starting Teaches Hoops, is a shooting coach at Mount Vernon High.

He’s noticed the change in Hinds’ game, as the 5-foot-11 point guaard has opened up his jumper.

“I watched him the other day and he was killing jump shots,” said Teachout.

“He’s an inside and outside presence right now, including from beyond the arc.”

Hinds has been actively pursued by a number of top-tier schools. UNLV offered in the winter, and Hinds took an unofficial visit to UConn shortly afterward.

“Right now, from what I see, I love it,” Hinds told NBE, referring to the Huskies campus.

He’s not the first guard from Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon to induce drool from the UConn coaching staff. Newly-minted Detroit Piston Ben Gordon, as we recall, left a lasting legacy under Jim Calhoun. Louisville and Seton Hall have now jumped into the picture.

Teachout heaped rich praise on Hinds, an innate leader with a penchant for taking it to the tin on bigger, taller players.

“He’s going to be like a Kenny Anderson,” said ‘Teach,’ who watched Anderson drop jaws at Molloy HS.

“Down at Bob Givens, he was murdering people.”

Hinds cooked opponents to the recipe of 37.5 points during his recent stay at Bob Givens.

How coachable is the latest product of Westchester County’s traditional basketball breeding grounds?

“On a scale of 1-10, he’s a 10,” said Teachout.

Teachout, the personal trainer for a number of professionals–including New York Knicks forward David Lee–has been instrumental to the success of five of the last six Westchester County Players of the Year.

All signs indicate Hinds will become no.6.

With graduation claiming explosive scorer Sherrod Wright, who’s headed to George Mason, the Knights will be Hinds’ team next year.

Hinds is one of the players NBE will be tracking this week at the Reebok All-American Camp in Philadelphia and throughout the month of July.
