HOOP GROUP HBC SUMMER METRO SHOWCASE (PART II)
June 28, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Jeff Borzello finished up in Neptune (NJ) at The Hoop Group headquarters on Sunday for the HBC Metro Summer Showcase where high school teams from New Jersey and some surrounding areas are competed on the court.
Unfortunately, the event was called off following the semifinal round as an ugly brawl took place near the conclusion of the Paterson (NJ) Catholic and Neumann-Goretti semifinal match-up. PC and St. Patrick’s were set to play in the final, but both teams were declared co-champions and the event was ended prematurely in the aftermath of the brawl.
Seton Hall Prep was the other team to advance to the Final Four of the event as they took care of Lincoln High School in one of the quarterfinal match-ups. Class of 2011 point guard Sterling Gibbs had a strong performance in the 68-55 win, scoring 25 points, 20 in the 1st half as the SHP cruised out to a 42-24 lead. Lincoln’s Shaq Stokes did his best to try and make things interested as the NYC club closed the gap to under 10 points, but they could not get too close. Stokes poured in 37 points.
NBE had recruiting updates on both Gibbs and Stokes in the HOOP GROUP HBC METRO SUMMER SHOWCASE (PART I) which was posted last night.
St. Patrick’s advanced to the finals with wins over Westtown (60-46) and Seton Hall Prep in the semifinals.
Paterson Catholic demolished Lakewood (NJ) in an earlier quarterfinal, 74-49, behind Seton Hall-commit Fuquan Edwin, who scored 28 points. PC held Lakewood star Jarrod Davis to just 4 points.
The PC win and Neumann-Goretti’s 51-42 win over Christian Brothers Academy set the stage for the PC/N-G contest. The game was chippy throughout with several technical fouls in the first half alone and PC leading by as many as 20 in the first half.
Wake Forest-commit Tony Chenault was strong for N-G and Daniel Stewart played well this weekend, too. Stewart, who had 18 against CBA, is a small forward in the class of 2010 and told NBE on Sunday he has wide-ranging interest from Providence, Houston, UMBC, Siena, Fairfield, Delaware and Robert Morris.
In the win over N-G, Paterson Catholic’s 2011 guard Myles Mack was getting his offense cranking. It is a familiar sight for those that follow NJ basketball. Mack, who is listed in the sub 5-foot-10 range, told NBE he has interest from Fordham, DePaul, Virginia Tech, Virginia, St. John’s and Xavier.
Largely considered the next big thing out of the Playaz AAU program and Paterson Catholic high school is class of 2012 guard Kyle Anderson. At 6-foot-6 already, Anderson can contribute in many ways and is likely a future shooting guard at the elite level. Just a rising sophomore, Anderson already let NBE know that Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Xavier, LaSalle, Texas, Florida and Wake Forest were on his list of colleges.
It is a shame the match-up between Jersey heavyweights Paterson Catholic and St. Patrick’s was unable to be played. It still was an exciting weekend of hoops, a preview of what July will bring!
