Big East among the many following Georgia star in class of 2010

‘Hotlanta’ is known as the capital of the ‘dirty’ South and College Park (GA) is a suburb that is having a growing reputation of producing athletic talent. College Park is the former home of the now infamous Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones.

Next up is a basketball player by the name of Jelan Kendrick who is now making a name for himself at Westlake High School, the same school that ‘Pacman’ once starred in several sports at.

Kendrick, who is entering his senior year of high school, is regarded as one of the top 30 basketball players in the class of 2010. At 6-foot-6, Kendrick will either wind up being a crafty small forward or a shooting guard in college, and with Kendrick’s combination of vision, court IQ and size, he should have an immediate impact once in college. Those traits were on display consistently at the recent NBA Top 100 camp on the Virginia campus.

Despite all this, Kendrick indicated to NBE this past weekend that he is still wide open as far as the recruitment process goes. Kendrick said that he has visited Miami, Alabama, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Marquette and Georgia.

“I really don’t have any top ones,” said Kendrick of the schools recruiting him. “I’m still wide open. I just worry about the AAU season and really try and see what high school I’m going to next year,” said Kendick.

Kendrick told NBE he holds offers from about 32 schools, including almost all the schools in the Big East, with Rutgers and South Florida as exceptions. Kendrick did share some of the factors he is looking for in a college program.

“A personal relationship with the coach, a coach that’s trying to get me to the next level, not only in the basketball aspect, but in the educational world and the business word, a team that’s willing to sacrifice themselves for a win, and just a school where they love their team,” stated Kendrick.

Despite not knowing if he’ll be playing basketball next season at Westlake High or instead at a powerful prep school in either Findlay Prep or Montverde Academy, Kendrick wants to work on some aspects of his game before he gets to college.

“Getting quicker definitely. Getting stronger, putting on some more weight. I play good with the weight I have, but you know [I could work on] everything really, “stated Kendrick.

For now the task at hand for Kendrick is AAU basketball and the summer basketball camp scene. Kendrick told NBE that he’ll take part in both the Deron Williams and Lebron James camp’s and that he possibly could earn a spot on the Nike USA Team. Kendrick also indicated that he’d make a decision on college after all the camps or before his senior basketball season begins this year.

For now though, Jelan is just a baby faced teenager who enjoys watching old highlights of Magic Johnson and Penny Hardaway. Kendrick, with his basketball ability, could very well wind up following those two and find himself one day in NBA as well.
