RUMBLE RECRUITING REVIEW: MARQUETTE & NOTRE DAME
June 22, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Over the course of the last 30 years, the Big East conference has expanded to areas never dreamed of by Dave Gavitt and the initial crew of school administrators that formed the conference back in 1979. Two examples of teams likely never entering their converstions when planning the Big East are Notre Dame and Marquette.
Under coach Buzz Williams, Marquette has become quite the recruiting juggernaut. While areas of Wisconsin, Chicago and Texas, where Williams is from, are the regions where most of their recruited talent has been coming from, the Golden Eagle staff continues to show their long reach by being listed by recruits from all over the country. The recent Rumble in the Bronx had several impressive prospects from the northeast listing the Milwaukee school as a potential college home.
In 1979, Notre Dame was one of ‘the’ names in college basketball. While the Irish have not been very consistent as a national challenger since Digger Phelps left the school, Mike Brey has a very solid program. Playing in the Big East brings plenty of attention in the New York City area for the Irish with their large fanbase populating the area. Several metro-area players are considering the Irish as their future college home.
Let’s take a look at the players listing each school…
Majok Majok, playing with CBC, gave NBE a list of Stanford, Marquette, Missouri, Arkansas, Oregon State, Minnesota, Providence, St. John’s and Harvard. His top three would be Stanford, Harvard and Marquette. He would really like to visit Stanford.
The list for Mohammad Lee currently reads Marquette, Xavier, Arkansas, Pittsburgh and Miami.
St. John’s, Xavier, South Carolina, Marquette, Providence, Kentucky, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Miami and Kansas were programs mentioned Saturday by Shane Southwell, a 6-foot-5 small forward with the Gauchos and Rice High School.
Derrick Williams, the 6-foot-7, 255-lb forward from St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) is here with the Sports University All-Stars and he listed Virginia, Hofstra (offer), Richmond (offer), Seton Hall (offer) and Marquette. Williams will head to a camp at Penn State in the coming weeks and will work on his handle and shooting this summer.
One of the hottest prospects of the spring, J.J. Moore, will have plenty of Big East coaches checking him out this summer. His list already sounds like that of an elite prospect with Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Marquette, St. John’s, Rutgers, Oklahoma and Florida recruiting him. Moore mentioned favorites as Louisville, Pitt, UConn, Syracuse and Marquette. He plans to visit UL, UConn, Marquette and Providence.
Russ Smith and the Juice All-Stars played well again, following up the win over NJ ABC with a late comeback to defeat Team Odom LA. His school list is a long one and has plenty of time to sort things out as he moves to South Kent for next season. The schools mentioned today were Notre Dame, St. John’s, Connecticut, Louisville, Providence, Seton Hall, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Stanford, South Carolina, Central Florida, South Florida, LaSalle, George Mason and VCU.
St. Peter’s Prep 6-foot-6 forward Ronald Roberts listed Maryland, Villanova, George Mason and Notre Dame as schools showing recent interest. Roberts checked in with NBE to make sure he did not forget to mention LaSalle, Temple and Houston.
Shouldn’t come as a surprise that the best player seen Friday night by Jeff Borzello was Kyrie Irving. Playing with the Roadrunners, who will have their work cut out for them in pool play tomorrow with Team Florida standing in their way. The boys from down south were cruising past Team Albany tonight, leading 46-11 at one look.
On the recruiting front, Irving mentioned his recent visits to Connecticut and Indiana and he is very interested in visiting Notre Dame and Texas A&M in the near future when he can. In all, Irving said he is considering 10 schools and also mentioned Duke, Virginia, Kentucky and Florida by name tonight.
As the weekend wore on, Irving’s Dad would be present on the sidelines decked out in an Indiana sweatshirt and hat…
