RUMBLE RECRUITING REVIEW: PITT & WVU

June 19, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Only natural to have Pittsburgh and West Virginia paired together when talking about Big East teams. Of course, many of their fans are already looking to find the latest College Football Odds of the next Backyard Brawl, but before the two meet in Morgantown next season on the gridiron, look for their basketball programs to go head to head on the recruiting trail.

Pittsburgh began to re-build their program utilizing many from New York City, often the overlooked, hard-nosed players. While their NYC recruiting might be slowing a little bit, with Brandin Knight on their staff, their recruiting in New Jersey is picking up and Tom Herrion also has many NYC/NJ connections that keep Pitt in the mix in the area.

West Virginia under Bob Huggins is quickly building a pipeline from NYC to Morgantown by previously recruiting ‘Truck’ Bryant, Devin Ebanks, Kevin Jones and Danny Jennings, all NYC-area natives. Once again, they are in the mix with several outstanding area prospects.

Let’s see who mentioned the rivals last weekend at the Rumble in the Bronx…

PITTSBURGH:

Myles Davis, the hot shooting guard from St. Peter’s Prep likes Virginia, Marist, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Louisville, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Arizona. He hopes to visit UVA and Pitt soon.

Kadeem Jack told NBE that his top three schools are Seton Hall, Pittsburgh and St. John’s. Rutgers, Miami, Arkansas, George Mason, Albany, Siena and others are also involved.

The list for Mohammad Lee currently reads Marquette, Xavier, Arkansas, Pittsburgh and Miami.

Ran into Isaiah Epps, the 2010 Pittsburgh commit and he said he is currently deciding between Hargrave Military Academy and National Christian Academy as a home for next season before becoming a Panther.

Jordan Allen, a 6-foot-5 forward from Bay Shore (NY) in the class of 2011 has been invited to the Clemson elite camp and is also getting new interest from Illinois, Florida State, LSU and Pittsburgh.

Another of the New Heights/St. Anthony’s big men is Ashton Pankey, who will take the advice of his legendary high school coach Bob Hurley and hit several camps this summer for more exposure. From the Big East, the power forward counts offers from Providence, West Virginia and St. John’s with UConn and Pitt looking.

The final member of the New Heights/St. Anthony’s frontline trio, Devon Collier told NBE he has offers from West Virginia, St. John’s, UConn and Pitt, Syracuse and Seton Hall out of the Big East.

One of the hottest prospects of the spring, J.J. Moore, will have plenty of Big East coaches checking him out this summer. His list already sounds like that of an elite prospect with Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Marquette, St. John’s, Rutgers, Oklahoma and Florida recruiting him. Moore mentioned favorites as Louisville, Pitt, UConn, Syracuse and Marquette. He plans to visit UL, UConn, Marquette and Providence.

WEST VIRGINIA:

Joey De La Rosa of New Heights/St. Raymond’s mentioned Providence, Georgetown, West Virginia, Hofstra and Fordham. The 6-foot-10 big man in the class of 2011 has been showing nice progression this spring.

Jermaine Sanders of New Heights/Rice HS lists Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Seton Hall and St. John’s as schools of interest. He will be going to visit UVA next weekend.

Jaylen Bond and the East Coast Elite was knocked out of the Silver bracket earlier by CBC. Bond told NBE this morning that he has taken unofficial visits to Florida, Virginia, LaSalle and will reschedule the trip to Florida State that was put off due to finals. Temple, St. Joseph’s, West Virginia and Villanova are also involved with the impressive 2011 forward.

Shaq Thomas will most likely decide on a college this August. However, he is planning to re-classify into the class of 2011 when he picks his new school for 2009-2010 as he is not returning to Mountain State Academy. The colleges on his list are Syracuse, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Florida, Providence, Seton Hall and Rutgers.

From the Big East, the power forward counts offers from Providence, West Virginia and St. John’s with UConn and Pitt looking.

CT Select took on the NY Metro Hawks in one of the early morning games with the boys from Connecticut getting the win.

Josh Turner, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Waterbury (CT) and Sacred Heart HS told NBE following the game that he is receiving interest from Providence, West Virginia, Rhode Island and UMass. Turned indicated a preference of staying close to home for college.
