RUMBLE RECRUITING REVIEW: PC & SHU

June 17, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment

I have decided to pair Seton Hall and Providence together because Paterson (NJ) small forward Fuquan Edwin Has Narrows List to Two Schools and is likely to choose between the Friars and Pirates within a month as he has visits scheduled to both of his finalists prior to the end of June.

Providence also made news at the end of the weekend with the verbal commitment of Gerard Coleman of the Tilton (NH) School. You can see NBE’s Big East Recruiting Update on Providence for more information on Coleman’s verbal.

The list of players mentioning the Friars this weekend is stunning. Keno Davis has been on the job at PC just over a year and the inroads he has made in recruiting is impressive. With Pat Skerry on his staff, the New England focus has been evident for some time, but the progress they have made in the NYC/NJ corridor is very impressive as well. Pretty soon, New England sports fans are not only going to be following the NFL Odds of the Patriots in the fall and winter, but the Friars will be garnering their own share of attention if they can translate the increase in recruiting attention to success on the court.

For Seton Hall the recruiting progress they hoped to make under Bobby Gonzalez has not happened as fast as fans were hoping, usually leaving the Pirates waiting on academic issues to be resolved with recruits, hitting the JUCO targets in the spring or checking out college basketball’s waiver wire for available transfers. However, progress seems to be coming along as many impressive prospects were mentioning SHU this weekend as you know Gonzo and staff are working hard in the very fertile NYC/NJ recruiting territory. Let’s see the results…

PROVIDENCE:

Majok Majok, playing with CBC, gave NBE a list of Stanford, Marquette, Missouri, Arkansas, Oregon State, Minnesota, Providence, St. John’s and Harvard. His top three would be Stanford, Harvard and Marquette. He would really like to visit Stanford.

Vaughn Gray, a forward from Don Bosco Prep, likes Delaware, Providence, UMass, Temple, St. Joe’s and Villanova. He hopes to check out PC and ‘Nova in the near future.

Joey De La Rosa of New Heights/St. Raymond’s mentioned Providence, Georgetown, West Virginia, Hofstra and Fordham. The 6-foot-10 big man in the class of 2011 has been showing nice progression this spring.

Tyler Olander of the Xpressions Elite 16-U squad told NBE this morning that he is hearing from Providence and Vanderbilt. Olander, a 6-foot-9 lefty with range, recently earned an invite to the Reebok All-American camp with his play at the Headliner Tryout camp. He attends E.O. Smith HS in CT.

Another player in the class of 2012 that is getting some strong college interest already is Alex Murphy. The younger brother of Florida-bound Erik Murphy and son of former Big East player Jay Murphy of Boston College, young Alex told NBE he already hears from Florida, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Rutgers, Boston College, Providence, Arizona and Connecticut.

Fuquan Edwin is down to Providence and Seton Hall (see above for more).

Tyreek Duren, the 5-foot-10 point guard from Philadelphia has looked very good again this weekend. It will not be surprising to see his recruitment get even higher in the summer. Currently, schools such as Virginia Tech and Baylor standout over Miami, Temple, LaSalle, St. Bonaventure, Providence and Virginia. Tyreek will visit with Temple this week and has visited LaSalle.

Shaq Thomas will most likely decide on a college this August. However, he is planning to re-classify into the class of 2011 when he picks his new school for 2009-2010 as he is not returning to Mountain State Academy. The colleges on his list are Syracuse, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Florida, Providence, Seton Hall and Rutgers.

Aaron Brown, who plays for St. Benedict’s (NJ) and the NY Metro Hawks, listed Harvard, Penn, Auburn, Miami, Providence, Virginia Tech and Penn State.

St. John’s, Xavier, South Carolina, Marquette, Providence, Kentucky, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Miami and Kansas were programs mentioned Saturday by Shane Southwell, a 6-foot-5 small forward with the Gauchos and Rice High School.

Russ Smith and the Juice All-Stars played well again, following up the win over NJ ABC with a late comeback to defeat Team Odom LA. His school list is a long one and has plenty of time to sort things out as he moves to South Kent for next season. The schools mentioned today were Notre Dame, St. John’s, Connecticut, Louisville, Providence, Seton Hall, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Stanford, South Carolina, Central Florida, South Florida, LaSalle, George Mason and VCU.

Will Regan’s list remains consistent with Providence, Virginia, Arizona State, Stanford and Maryland.

Another of the New Heights/St. Anthony’s big men is Ashton Pankey, who will take the advice of his legendary high school coach Bob Hurley and hit several camps this summer for more exposure. From the Big East, the power forward counts offers from Providence, West Virginia and St. John’s with UConn and Pitt looking.

One of the hottest prospects of the spring, J.J. Moore, will have plenty of Big East coaches checking him out this summer. His list already sounds like that of an elite prospect with Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Marquette, St. John’s, Rutgers, Oklahoma and Florida recruiting him. Moore mentioned favorites as Louisville, Pitt, UConn, Syracuse and Marquette. He plans to visit UL, UConn, Marquette and Providence.

CT Select took on the NY Metro Hawks in one of the early morning games with the boys from Connecticut getting the win.

Josh Turner, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Waterbury (CT) and Sacred Heart HS told NBE following the game that he is receiving interest from Providence, West Virginia, Rhode Island and UMass. Turned indicated a preference of staying close to home for college.

Mass Rivals, led by Carson Desrosiers, avoided the upset theme and got past the BC Eagles, 76-74, in overtime on Friday night. The BC Eagles missed a potential winning free throw in the last seconds of regulation.

Desrosiers lived up to his previous hype with a very strong performance, finishing well inside and stepping out with a strong face-up game for a 6′10 player. Has the ability to lead a fast break handling the ball and dishing off for a lay-up. Very versatile for a young big man.

Earlier this week in anticipation of the Rumble, Desrosiers updated NBE on his recruitment, including filling us in about a couple visits from last month.

“I visited Purdue about a month and a half back and Marquette the day after,” said Desrosiers. “I enjoyed both. The campuses were at the opposite ends of the spectrum, with Purdue being in a college town and Marquette being in the city.”

The Boilermakers and Golden Eagles join Arizona State, UNLV, Stanford, Georgia Tech and Big East schools Syracuse and Providence to form his top eight schools, but he indicated more schools are still coming after him, including Florida.

SETON HALL:

Myles Davis, the hot shooting guard from St. Peter’s Prep likes Virginia, Marist, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Louisville, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Arizona. He hopes to visit UVA and Pitt soon.

Jermaine Sanders of New Heights/Rice HS lists Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Seton Hall and St. John’s as schools of interest. He will be going to visit UVA next weekend.

Kadeem Jack told NBE that his top three schools are Seton Hall, Pittsburgh and St. John’s. Rutgers, Miami, Arkansas, George Mason, Albany, Siena and others are also involved.

Fuquan Edwin is down to Providence and Seton Hall (see more above).

Derrick Williams, the 6-foot-7, 255-lb forward from St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) is here with the Sports University All-Stars and he listed Virginia, Hofstra (offer), Richmond (offer), Seton Hall (offer) and Marquette. Williams will head to a camp at Penn State in the coming weeks and will work on his handle and shooting this summer.

The final member of the New Heights/St. Anthony’s frontline trio, Devon Collier told NBE he has offers from West Virginia, St. John’s, UConn and Pitt, Syracuse and Seton Hall out of the Big East.

Michael Gilchrist, the eventual Rumble MVP and super 2011 prospect, rattled off a school list of Villanova, Memphis, Indiana, Georgetown, Kentucky, Syracuse, Louisville and Seton Hall after Friday night’s opening win.

Tyrone Garland, the Philadelphia guard from Bartram High School, provided a school list that included offers from Temple, LaSalle, Nebraska, St. Bonaventure and Drexel. Many high-majors are paying attention, including Seton Hall and Rutgers from the Big East, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Virginia out of the ACC as well as Memphis and Western Kentucky.
