RUMBLE IN THE BRONX: DAY TWO (PART II)

June 14, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Got away from the live blog once the afternoon rolled around, but Jeff Borzello and Matt Whitfield worked through the afternoon into the evening gathering information from many of the top players at the loaded 2009 Rumble in the Bronx.

Special thanks to Jim Hart and everyone with the City Rocks AAU program and the hosts at Fordham and Manhattan for keeping everything running smoothly.

In our first installment on Saturday, Rumble in the Bronx: Day Two (Part I), you can find updates on players such as Matt Brown, DeJuan Coleman, Shabazz Napier, Carson Desrosiers, J.J. Moore, Rod Odom and Josh Turner.

Here is a look at the rest of the updates that Jeff Borzello, while scouting the action at Fordham, and Matt Whitfield, while at Manhattan, gathered on Saturday.

From Jeff Borzello:

At the half, the NY Gauchos were up 47-26 on the Carolina Heat. Doron Lamb would lead the way with 17 in the first half and Melsahn Basabe and Mohammad Lee each had 11. The Gauchos would go on to win by 30.

Following the game, Doron Lamb would tell NBE that Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, St. John’s, Connecticut, Louisville, Arizona, UCLA and Rutgers were schools in the mix. He has visited Louisville and plans to see Kentucky, Kansas and Oklahoma in the relatively near future.

Kadeem Jack told NBE that his top three schools are Seton Hall, Pittsburgh and St. John’s. Rutgers, Miami, Arkansas, George Mason, Albany, Siena and others are also involved.

Another player in the class of 2012 that is getting some strong college interest already is Alex Murphy. The younger brother of Florida-bound Erik Murphy and son of former Big East player Jay Murphy of Boston College, young Alex told NBE he already hears from Florida, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Rutgers, Boston College, Providence, Arizona and Connecticut.

The list for Mohammad Lee currently reads Marquette, Xavier, Arkansas, Pittsburgh and Miami.

Ran into Isaiah Epps, the 2010 Pittsburgh commit and he said he is currently deciding between Hargrave Military Academy and National Christian Academy as a home for next season before becoming a Panther.

Fuquan Edwin is down to Providence and Seton Hall. We will have more on Edwin and his two finalists in the near future.

Tyreek Duren, the 5-foot-10 point guard from Philadelphia has looked very good again this weekend. It will not be surprising to see his recruitment get even higher in the summer. Currently, schools such as Virginia Tech and Baylor standout over Miami, Temple, LaSalle, St. Bonaventure, Providence and Virginia. Tyreek will visit with Temple this week and has visited LaSalle.

Shaq Thomas will most likely decide on a college this August. However, he is planning to re-classify into the class of 2011 when he picks his new school for 2009-2010 as he is not returning to Mountain State Academy. The colleges on his list are Syracuse, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Florida, Providence, Seton Hall and Rutgers.

Aishon White mentioned he has heard from Houston, Fordham, Robert Morris, Florida and Siena.

Aaron Brown, who plays for St. Benedict’s (NJ) and the NY Metro Hawks, listed Harvard, Penn, Auburn, Miami, Providence, Virginia Tech and Penn State.

Pe’shon Howard, who plays for Oak Hill during the school season, listed Stanford, Arkansas, Harvard, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Virginia, Rutgers, South Carolina, Arizona and Xavier as colleges of interest.

St. John’s, Xavier, South Carolina, Marquette, Providence, Kentucky, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Miami and Kansas were programs mentioned Saturday by Shane Southwell, a 6-foot-5 small forward with the Gauchos and Rice High School.

Russ Smith and the Juice All-Stars played well again, following up the win over NJ ABC with a late comeback to defeat Team Odom LA. His school list is a long one and has plenty of time to sort things out as he moves to South Kent for next season. The schools mentioned today were Notre Dame, St. John’s, Connecticut, Louisville, Providence, Seton Hall, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Stanford, South Carolina, Central Florida, South Florida, LaSalle, George Mason and VCU.

Will Regan‘s list remains consistent with Providence, Virginia, Arizona State, Stanford and Maryland.

From Matt Whitfield:

Jordan Allen, a 6-foot-5 forward from Bay Shore (NY) in the class of 2011 has been invited to the Clemson elite camp and is also getting new interest from Illinois, Florida State, LSU and Pittsburgh.

St. Peter’s Prep 6-foot-6 forward Ronald Roberts listed Maryland, Villanova, George Mason and Notre Dame as schools showing recent interest.

Derrick Williams, the 6-foot-7, 255-lb forward from St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) is here with the Sports University All-Stars and he listed Virginia, Hofstra (offer), Richmond (offer), Seton Hall (offer) and Marquette. Williams will head to a camp at Penn State in the coming weeks and will work on his handle and shooting this summer.

Keala King of Cali Supreme, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard who attends Dominguez High in Compton (CA) plans visits to Cal and Stanford and also has offers from Arizona, Washington, Georgia Tech, Connecticut, Kentucky and Oregon State.

King’s Cali Supreme teammate Dwayne Polee is a verbal commitment to USC. With his father, Dwayne Sr., Tim Floyd’s former Director of Basketball Operations, Polee’s commitment is in the air. He mentioned waiting to see who the new coach is and also has interest in Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, UNLV and Arizona.

Another of the New Heights/St. Anthony’s big men is Ashton Pankey, who will take the advice of his legendary high school coach Bob Hurley and hit several camps this summer for more exposure. From the Big East, the power forward counts offers from Providence, West Virginia and St. John’s with UConn and Pitt looking.

The final member of the New Heights/St. Anthony’s frontline trio, Devon Collier told NBE he has offers from West Virginia, St. John’s, UConn and Pitt, Syracuse and Seton Hall out of the Big East.

Jaylen Bond was trying to set-up a trip to check out Florida State recently, but could not make it due to finals.

Another from New Heights with a lot of Big East interest is powerful forward Jayvaughn Pinkston of Bishop Loughlin. According to New Heights’ AAU coach Kimani Young, who was the video coordinator at St. John’s this past season, Pinkston “is the guy in New York” right now. He recently visited Marquette for one of their elite specialty camps and will take unofficial trips, most likely, to Villanova and Arizona. St. John’s, who is considered the leader, and Tennessee were also mentioned by Young as the schools on Pinkston’s list.
