BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (6/5/2009)
June 5, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Another Friday afternoon is upon us! We have some good stuff planned from the weekend as we will have our write-up from the Frankie Williams Celebrity event from last night in Greenburgh (NY) where future Big East-er Dante Taylor was mighty impressive before Lance Stephenson stole the show after his fashionably late entrance. Also last night was the Rasual Butler All-City Classic in Philly and we will have some items from that excellent event as well as stories on a rising NYC youngster and Ray Mernagh’s column on the state of college basketball recruiting…
To whet the appetite this afternoon, there are stories on Tyrone Garland’s recruitment, a recruiting visit on tap for Derrick Williams, a feature on Mike Rosario, some coaching staff updates, a player transferring out of the Big East, a visit ahead for Davontay Grace, a Dante Cunningham NBA update and a look at Bobby Gonzalez and the direction of SHU.
Check it all out below…
One player to watch this summer is Philadelphia – Bartram High School guard Tyrone Garland. The 6-foot-one guard has shown the ability to score the basketball, leading the area in scoring last season with just under 29 points a game. There are Offers in Hand for Garland (RecruitRecon.com) from Temple, La Salle, Drexel, Nebraska and St. Bonaventure and he also has Rutgers, Providence, Virginia Tech, Rice, Seton Hall and Maryland interested currently.

Derrick Williams has several schools in the Big East taking a look at him. This weekend, Virginia Gets a Visit from St. Anthony’s Star (Daily Progress) as he will trip down to Charlottesville (VA) with AAU coach and St. Anthony’s freshman coach Eric Harrield, who is a UVA alum.
The article says Williams has offers from Seton Hall and Fordham and Miami, Virginia Tech, Providence, St. John’s and Marquette have shown interest in the burly 6-foot-7 power forward who knows how to use his strength in the paint.

Adam Zagoria for Sny.tv take a look at the bisy summer of Rutgers sophomore shooting guard Mike Rosario as Rutgers’ Rosario Becomes World Traveler this summer with the Scarlet Knights’ team trip overseas and his upcoming experience with the Puerto Rico national U-19 squad.

Speaking of Zagoria and his Big East news, in today’s post at ZagsBlog.com he hits on several items that are Big East related.
First, Zags has the story that FDU head coach Tom Green was unceremoniously dumped by the FDU admin after 26 years with the school. Zags mentions Seton Hall assistant Dermon Player as a potential candidate for the opening.
Speaking of the Pirates, sophomore forward Brandon Walters joins classmate Mike Davis as players leaving the SHU program this spring. Walters is looking at Siena, Hofstra and Manhattan, according to his high school coach Dwayne ‘Tiny’ Morton of Lincoln (NYC) HS. This will leave the Pirates with two open scholarships on their 2009-2010 roster.
Marquette will be hosting their elite camp this weekend and Zags is reporting that class of 2011 Thomas Jefferson (NYC) guard Davontay Grace will be visiting the school to take part. Grace has previously visited St. John’s, unofficially, according to ZagsBlog.com.

Despite the transfers out of the program, it is the transfers into the program, along with the return of Jeremy Hazell, that have many looking forward to seeing if 2009-2010 is the year that Seton Hall and Bobby Gonzalez breakinto the top half of the Big East and into the mix for a NCAA Tournament bid. Hoops Weiss of the NY Daily News believes that the Fiery Seton Hall Coach Gonzalez Has His Pirates Sailing in the Right Direction.

Here is an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer on Dante Cunningham and the former Villanova forward’s quest to make the NBA: Villanova’s Cunningham – Next Stop NBA.

There is a staff change at Cincinnati as a Former Withrow Coach Joins UC (WLWT.com) on staff as an assitant. George Jackson, who was 311-146, including 12 Queen City Conference-Metro titles, eight sectional crowns, and five district championships, in 20 years at Withrown HS, joins the staff. Current assistant Chris Goggin will move in the Director of Basketball Operations position to make room for Jackson, who previously served as an assistant under Louis Orr at Seton Hall, where he helped SHU reach two NCAA Tournaments in three seasons, before moving to Bowling Green with Orr. The Falcons earned a share of the MAC title last season with Jackson on staff.
