NOEL JOHNSON: BACK ON THE MARKET
June 1, 2009 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment
USC signee has release and is looking for a new home for 2009-10
Noel Johnson seemed to get swept off his feet while visiting the University of Southern California when they hosted Ohio State on the gridiron last September. Not too long after his visit, the Fayette County (GA) High School small forward made a verbal commitment to coach Tim Floyd and the USC program.
Johnson, the son of Lynbert ‘Cheese’ Johnson, a former star at Wichita State who accumulated over 1,900 points and 1,000 rebounds in his four year career with the Shockers, kept his promise to the Trojans and signed a letter of intent last November. However, after more accusations of wrongdoing in the recruitment of OJ Mayo were made against USC recently, Johnson has decided to re-open his recruitment and has been given a release from his LOI by the Trojans.
“There was a cloud over the situation,” Cheese Johnson told Andy Katz (see article HERE) of ESPN on why they asked for a release. “And we don’t see it getting better. It’s a tough decision, but as parents, we have to put our son in the best situation possible, and if we’re not, shame on us.”
Noel Johnson impressed NBE each time we saw him in action last summer. He was most impressive at the Lebron James Skills Academy where the 6’7, 185-lb wing showed the ability to knock down the three-point shot. He used his size to be able to get his shot off when being guarded tightly and put the ball in the hoop often when doing so.
Ideally, the Johnson’s are hoping that this process is handled quickly with summer sessions starting very soon for incoming freshmen and they hope to give Noel the chance to get ahead. However, the number of schools making it known of their interest in recruiting Johnson, the process might have to take some more time. it is not too often a quality prospect is available on June 1st for the following season. Many schools have an open scholarship and this would be a very good late addition for any school.
Cheese Johnson told Andy Katz that Georgia Tech, UNLV, Miami, LSU, Seton Hall, Florida, Florida State, Connecticut, Pittsburgh and Georgia, among others, were schools on their list to be considered.
NBE will follow the situation closely to see if Noel Johnson becomes a quality later addition for one lucky Big East school.
