WEEKEND RECRUITING UPDATE

May 17, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The NBE staff is very busy this weekend gathering up some of the latest recruiting news and notes from around the basketball landscape. Already, recruiting updates that fans of 14 of the 16 Big East teams will find interesting in the update (sorry Hoya and WVU fans, we will try again tomorrow).

On Saturday, Matt Whitfield hit the IS8 semifinals and took in the exciting action, Doug Ferguson set out for the Attack Center in Chicago for the Reebok Headliner Camp and Zach Smart headed up to Amherst (MA) for the BasketBull Spring Classic.

Here are some of the recruiting notes gathered during a busy Saturday…

At IS8 on Saturday, the young NJ Playaz Sophomores upended RISE in one semifinal and the NY Panthers Seniors, led by Lance Stephenson‘s 22 points, upended the New Heights Juniors.

Myles Davis of the Playaz Sophomores is a talented prospect in the class of 2011. The St. Peters Prep guard Davis stated to NBE this past season that he has already attracted attention from Louisville, Memphis, Notre Dame, Villanova, Kentucky, Seton Hall, Rutgers and St. Joseph’s. Today he informed NBE that you can add Wake Forest to the list.

Isaiah Stokley has had a strong spring for RISE in the IS8 league and throughout the playoffs. Stokley was a senior this past season at Thomas Edision Vocational and Tech. He is unsure of his plans for next season, but he is considering going the prep route which could mean attending the Patterson School in North Carolina. The JUCO route is another option and Indian Hills (IA) Community College or South Plains (TX) College were possible destinations mentioned by Stokley on Saturday to NBE. He also mentioned he has received some interest from Seton Hall on the recruiting front.

While Born Ready shined with his 22 points, he pretty much took a backseat to Jayvaughn Pinkston, the Bishop Loughlin class of 2010 manchild, as the game’s best player. Pinkston scored in the range of 30 points and showed why he is a force to be reckoned with.

Following the game, NBE caught up with New Heights coach, former St. John’s assistant Kimani Young for an update on Pinkston.

“I would say he is a Big East player,” Young remarked.

Young informed NBE that Pinkston has been on several unofficial visits to St. John’s and the Redstorm would likely be considered a strong leader for his services. Villanova and a ‘bunch of others’ are also involved.

Out in Chicago the place to be Saturday was the Attack Center for the Reebok Headliner Camp, Chicago-style.

One top player catching the attention of NBE on Saturday was class of 2011 Rock Island (IL) High School guard Chasson Randle. With scholarship offers, according to Randle, from every Big 10 school as well as Iowa State, he is a player to watch. Out of the Big East, Marquette, DePaul and Cincinnati were singled out as showing interest in his recruitment.

6-foot-9 St. Ignatius College Prep of Chicago (IL) big man Nnana Egwu was very impressive in the paint Saturday. The class of 2011 big man is receiving more and more interest from colleges almost daily. Egwu told NBE on Saturday that he has offers from Illinois, DePaul, Northwestern, Oregon State, Wisconsin and Purdue. Others from the Big East showing interest include Marquette and Notre Dame.

Jacob Williams is a class of 2011 shooting guard people need to know! The 6-foot-5 St. Patrick of Chicago (IL) prospect is a ‘young Evan Turner’ according to Mike Mullins, who is the AAU director of the Illinois Wolves. Williams told NBE he has offers from Illinois, Oregon, DePaul, Iowa State and schools such as Providence and Marquette are showing him interest out of the Big East.

We will have much more on the BasketBull Spring Classic tomorrow, but the word is out, Shabazz Napier is a player! The 5-foot-11 guard out of Lawrence Academy has been lighting it up this spring in impressive fashion. His recruitment is blowing up and right now Providence is showing strong interest while Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall and South Florida are also tracking his progress at this time.

Although he is in the process of completing just his freshman year in high school, Jamesville-Dewitt (NY) High School big man DaJuan Coleman is a player college basketball fans are going to hear plenty of over the next three years BEFORE he even reaches college. Coleman teamed up this past high school season with Syracuse-bound point guard Brandon Triche for a state championship and earned his share of admirers along the way with ESPN.com placing him atop their rankings in the class of 2012.

On the early recruiting front, the home town Orange are already in tight with schools like Connecticut, Kentucky and Ohio State already trying to get their foot in the door as well, with many more certainly to take their swing as well.
