NEW HEIGHTS/PLAYAZ IS8 DOUBLEHEADER RECAP

By Matt Whitfield
On a hazy Thursday night, IS8 held their third night off first round playoff games. In the first game a young, potential-filled Playaz Sophomores squad was matched up against the New Heights Seniors. Down 44-21 at halftime, New Heights came back to get the game to under 10 points using heavy pressure and full court pressure defense. However, the Playaz led by Myles Mack would not be out done as they squeaked out a victory. Mack led all scorers in the game with 21.
The second and the final game of the night was a no-contest as, surprisingly, the Playaz Juniors were thoroughly outhustled and outplayed by the younger New Heights Sophomores squad. The Playaz had only scored 35 points at the end of three periods, thus it’s not too hard to tell the outcome from there. Jermaine Sanders led all scorers in the game with 21.
Below are some player notes from Thursday’s doubleheader as well as some recruiting notes gathered after the games. NBE will be back at IS8 on Saturday as the second round of the playoffs get underway.
Myles Mack
Excellent handle as always. Best looking three-point shot on the floor and his results were there as well. Still needs to bulk up vastly to be a factor at Division 1-A, but time is on his side. Very alert on the floor, in this game Mack accounted for numerous steals or fast breaks in which he was not going to be beat on. One of his best looking plays in this game was where he blew by almost everyone taking the ball up court switching hands to beat the lone defender, resulting in the easy looking layup with some flash. Had a team-high 21 points.
Told NBE after that he has new interest from Virginia Tech on the recruiting side and he has previously mentioned Georgetown, Syracuse, Fordham and Drexel in the past to NBE.

Vaughn Gray
Was a great presence on the blocks down low tonight, looking more comfortable now on all parts of the court as well from previous viewings. Handle looks to be improved as well.
Told NBE after the game that he has Big East interest from Providence, Rutgers and Seton Hall.

Myles Davis
Bread and butter continues to be his mid range and three point shot. Nice off the glass basket despite being around three defenders several inches taller than him.

Jordan Allen
According to Jimmy Salmons, Allen missed Thursday’s IS8 Playoff game due to an injury.

Derek Randall
Real hard to believe he’s only a sophomore upon first glance, is about college sized already. Got into foul trouble early, which kept this big man from showcasing his talents, which have been getting strong reviews this spring.
Told NBE he has college interest from St. John’s, Miami, and Marist.
Fuquan Edwin
Still as wiry as the last time NBE saw him. Maybe the best looking athlete on the floor. With Isaiah Epps missing, the Playaz seemed out of sync and Edwin was not really on his A game with his team struggling to score.. However, Edwin ended the second quarter by splitting the defense for an easy basket. Then hit a nice mid-range jump shot. Then followed that up with another nice-looking jump shot, an area of his game many are watching to see if he develops it. Despite finishing with a team high 20 points Edwin just wasn’t himself tonight. In the fourth quarter he missed an uncontested layup off of a steal. A strong Edwin or not, his Playaz squad lost to a hungrier New Heights Sophomores squad.
Edwin told NBE after that he is down to Providence, Seton Hall and Temple and that he’ll be taking a visit to the Providence College campus in “about a week”.

Ronald Roberts
Played sparingly in the second half. Not overly noticeable in this game, but then again when your team has only 35 points to start the fourth quarter then who is. Despite missing an easy put in, Roberts put his own rebound in despite being in heavy traffic, a nice move.

Cameron Ayers
Needs to bulk up to be considered a high-major college prospect. He was very quiet in this game, again, as the Playaz struggled to score against the younger New Heights squad. Was hoping to see more after reports of some good outings earlier this spring.

Jermaine Sanders
Possesses good size for just a sophomore and ideal for a young Division One prospect. Very dominant in the first half and in this game. Nice looking jump-shot. By far the best player on the New Heights Sophomores squad. Hit a three-point shot as time expired in the third quarter. Was an integral part of the New Heights domination against an older New Jersey Playaz squad. Had a game-high 21 points. Is a wing to watch develop the next couple seasons.
Big East schools such as West Virginia and St. John’s are already showing interest in the 2011 prospect that attends Rice High School. He told NBE that Ben Gordon was his favorite college player and following in his footsteps to UConn is what he hopes to do.
