There are a few news and notes around the Big East on this Thursday morning. First, the NCAA has released the latest APR findings. South Florida has some serious work to do across their athletic programs to bring their scores up while Seton Hall and Cincinnati also fall below the NCAA’s acceptable rate on the basketball side.
A few recruiting news and notes as there are updates on ‘Fab’ Melo who is visiting a Big East school this weekend, Adreian Payne, who looks more and more like a player not coming to the Big East, a new name for 2009 emerges with a few Big East schools taking a look, Allan Chaney has a few possible visits to Big East schools on his mind and Brandon Triche’s ascension as SU’s next great guard might be on an accelerated learning curve because of the SU professional defections.
Read about these below…
Fabricio De Melo, known as ‘Feb’ Melo’, a 7-foot native of Brazil who attends Sagemont High School in Weston (FL), will be taking an unofficial visit to Syracuse this weekend. Could it be Another Melo for Syracuse (Post-Standard)? The Orange coaches hope so, but the competition will be tough as he has already taken unofficial visits to Connecticut and Louisville, while receiving scholarship offers from the likes of Texas, Miami, Florida and Florida State as his reputation is growing rapidly among college recruiters.

Last year, Akron won a major recruiting coup when they secured a commitment from Zeke Marshall over Pittsburgh and others. This year, they were hoping for a similar result with highly touted Adreian Payne a 6-foot-10 center from Jefferson High School in Dayton (OH). Pitt, West Virginia, Cincinnati and others were hoping Payne would choose their school. It looks like he has narrowed his recruitment down significantly, according to the Akron Beacon-Journal, as the Zips are Out of the Payne Sweepstakes and Ohio State, Michigan State and Kentucky are the three left standing.

Gokhan Sirin, a 6-foot-9, 208-pound forward from St. Mary’s Ryken Prep in Leonardtown (MD) has found himself on the radar of several college programs looking to add late help in the 2009 recruiting classes. The native if Istanbul, Turkey hit 47 3-pointers this season in averaging 12.3 points per game, according to the Washington Post. St. Mary’s Ryken coach Matt Tallman said that Sirin has scholarship offers from Georgetown, Charlotte and Loyola (MD), but is interested in South Florida as the Bulls Look into 6’9 Shooter (St. Pete Times).

Florida transfer Allan Chaney is working through his lost of potential transfer destinations. After a good visit to St. Joseph’s last week, Chaney is Visiting Two This Week (ZagsBlog), Temple and Virginia Tech. Chaney has also expressed a desire to visit Providence and that could happen next week, along with a trip to Xavier. However, according to Zagoria today at ZagsBlog, PC is no longer pursuing Chaney as a transfer and will hold the scholarship for the 2010 class.
Seton Hall and Rutgers are also possibilities for visits if he remains undecided after the planned upcoming trips.

With Jonny Flynn, Eric Devendorf and Paul Harris all opting for the professional ranks rather than returning to Syracuse, incoming freshman guard Brandon Triche will be immediately thrust into a major role for the squad. Here is an interview he did with Dime Magazine as they take a look at The Next Great Syracuse Guard.

The NCAA has begun to release their latest APR ratings and hand out the penalties. In the 16-team Big East, only Cincinnati, Seton Hall and South Florida scored below the NCAA’s standard of acceptable on the basketball side. In fact, USF Posted the Lowest Football APR School Among BCS Schools (St. Pete Times) and the third lowest in basketball, ouch!
