MORE TALENT AT GOD’S ACADEMY

Coach Tim Miller has several talented prospects, including his son, who are open to colleges

Last week the NBE Basketball Report took a look at Austin Waverly and Kervens Calixte as the God’s Academy Duo is Seeing Big East Interest on the recruiting front this spring. Austin is a class of 2009 big man that is still looking for a home for the 2009-2010 season while Calixte recently made the decision to return to God’s Academy to prep another season.

The God’s Academy program is run by Tim Miller, a staple in Texas high school and AAU hoops for many years, and is the founder and coach of God’s Academy. The prep school in North Texas was 35-9 on the season as the Ambassadors were bursting with talent, which included KC Ross-Miller, coach Miller’s highly regarded son, as well as Calixte, Austin, 6-foot-9 senior Richard Armardi, 6-foot-7 junior wing Titus Rubbles and 6-foot-10 senior Brandon West, among others.

Guard KC Ross-Miller originally made an early verbal commitment to Kentucky and former coach Billy Gillispie early in the summer of 2007. However, after the coaching change in Lexington with Gillispie being fired and John Calipari being hired, Miller has opted to take a longer look at his options.

“KC has decommitted from UK,” coach Miller told NBE. “Georgetown, South Florida, OK St., Baylor, Texas A&M, Connecticut, Auburn, Ole Miss and many more have contacted me about him already.”

Calixte, the younger Miller’s backcourt mate on last year’s team, was sifting through some spring recruiting period interest of several high-major programs, including an offer from TCU, before deciding to take a post-grad prep season.

“Kervin is a great shooter and is very athletic,” said his coach. “He has to get better off the bounce. He will prep at GA next year.”

With another season of AAU basketball, Calixte plans to show college coaches what he has on the trail this summer playing for Florida Assault out of his home state. Look for the interest from college coaches to grow.

“[I] got [an] offer from TCU and North Texas,” said Calixte. “My coach [has] been talking to South Florida and DePaul. My coach told me about Seton Hall and Providence also.”

Standing at 6-foot-10 and weighing in at 228-pounds is unsigned senior center Waverly Austin, a native of the DC-area who has been a member of the DC Blue Devils AAU program in the past.

“TCU came and South Florida and Auburn and Ole Miss are supposed to come soon,” Austin informed NBE last week on the status of his recruitment.

“Waverly Austin is doing alright,” coach Miller said. “He [has] gotten better playing around the basket. He has to get stronger and more sound on offense.”

Another unsigned senior big man drawing impressive interest from college recruiters is Richard Armardi. The 6-foot-9 native of Toronto, Canada didn’t join the Ambassadors’ program until around the New Year, but he has made an impression on his coach and on college recruiters as a possible spring signee.

Georgetown, Oklahoma State, [and] Oklahoma are all on him,” according to coach Miller.

A player to really keep an eye on in the God’s Academy program is 6-foot-7 junior wing Titus Rubbles. The Texas native should be a top recruit in the class of 2010, according to coach Miller.

“Titus is a great wing,” says coach Miller. “He can post and go off the dribble. He can shoot [in the] mid-range very well. He [is] a great rebounder.”

God’s Academy has been in existence for five years in Texas. While basketball might be the reason many of the players matriculate into the private school program, coach Miller is very proud of their track record in getting their student-athletes into college.

“GA has had over 50 kids go to all levels of college,” Miller to NBE. “Our kids are strong with academics regardless of what happened with the NCAA”.
