Texas prep school full of talent with Austin and Calixte looking at Big East
Tim Miller, a staple in the local AAU basketball scene in the Dallas (TX) area, as well as the head of the US Elite National Basketball Camps, has been leading burgeoning prep power God’s Academy since it’s inception in the fall of 2005. The Dallas prep school has been drawing quality players looking to improve their academics and chances of qualifying for college while improving their baskerball skills under the guidance of Miller.
This past season, led by elite junior guard KC Ross-Miller, the Ambassadors posted a 35-9 record while capturing the 2009 NACA national championship as well as the NPA national title. Ross-Miller was a verbal commitment to Kentucky and former coach Billy Gillispie, but according to the God’s Academy website, he has re-opened his recruitment in light of the coaching change in Lexington. While Ross-Miller is looking to be at square one with his recruitment, senior center Waverly Austin is looking to narrow down his list and guard Kervens Calixte has made a decision on where he will play in 2009-2010.
While reports began surfacing about a week ago that Kervens Calixte had committed to TCU, the athletic 6-foot-4 senior guard informed NBE that it is not the case. Instead, Calixte is going to do another season of prep basketball and be part of the 2010 recruiting class.
“No, I am not,” said Calixte when asked if he had committed to TCU. “My coach told me they want me bad.”
Calixte will hit the AAU trail this spring and summer with his home state team, Florida Assault. They will be participating in the Disney Easter Classic the weekend of April 10th-12th. As an unsigned 2009 prospect, the interest in his services had begun to pick up steam. Now, after averaging about 15 points a game in the 2008-2009 season for the Ambassadors, Calixte will hit the AAU trail looking to draw more interest in his skills.
“[I] got [an] offer from TCU and North Texas,” said Calixte. “My coach [has] been talking to South Florida and DePaul. My coach told me about Seton Hall and Providence also.”
Calixte also mentioned that Kentucky showed some interest when Billy Gillispie was the head coach and Central Florida has also been in contact. He will continue to improve his game and prepare for the college level in the meantime as well as hitting the club team circuit.
“I just been in the gym working out, trying tp add 10 more pounds of muscle and working on my ball handling,” Calixte said.
Calixte’s teammate with the Ambassadors is 6-foot-10, 228-pound unsigned senior center Waverly Austin, a native of the DC-area who has been a member of the DC Blue Devils AAU program in the past.
Being an athletic big man available at this time of the recruiting cycle has its advantages and Austin is seeing high-major college interest come his way at God’s Academy in Texas.
“TCU came and South Florida and Auburn and Ole Miss are supposed to come soon,” Austin informed NBE this week.
After schools come by and take a look, Austin will select his official visits. Not only will a lucky school receive a coveted big man addition to their roster this spring who is a solid shot blocker, willing to rebound and run the floor, they will get a player with a surprising skill set he considers his strength for a big man.
“I think I am one of the best big men in the ‘09 class at passing,” Austin shared with NBE.
As the recruitment moves along, we will be sure to check in for updates.
