Delaware native is a class of 2011 prospect already in high demand

The Sanford School in Hockessin (DE) has been a destination of college recruiters in the past. Villanova landed a key component to their recent success out of the college perparatory program in Delaware when they plucked Will Sheridan from the school several years back. Now, several Big East schools and others around the country are taking an aggressive approach in the recruitment of the next star, 6-foot-3 sophomore (class of 2011) shooting guard Trevor Cooney.

Villanova, West Virginia, Rutgers, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Maryland, St. Joe’s, Delaware [and] Virginia, all these schools have offered,” replied Cooney when asked by NBE what schools were currently recruiting him.

Even though the 6’3, 186-pound shooting guard was just a sophomore, he led his team into the state playoffs averaging nearly 22 points and over 11 rebounds a game, passing the 1,000-point plateau this season. Know primarily for his jump shot, which he quickly mentioned as the strength of his game, Cooney has made strides in other areas and continues to work at improving his ability to get to the basket and finish.

This spring and summer you can expect to see a lot of Cooney on the AAU travel circuit as he will be playing for the very visible Team Final program. As well as playing on the 17-U squad for Team Final, more exposure will be forthcoming as he looks forward to attending the Paul Pierce Camp and hopefully an invite to the Lebron James Skills Academy will follow. Getting to the elite camps of some of the schools on his list will also be a priority during the summer. Last summer Cooney attended the elite camp at SU and the Class of 2011 Orange Target Attended the SU-Notre Dame Game (Syracuse Post-Standard) this past season in the Carrier Dome.

Although his recruitment sounds like it is pretty defined at this early stage, Cooney is in no hurry to decide or put an end to the process at this stage of the game.

“No time frame yet,” Cooney remarked about the timing of a potential decision. “The coaching staff and my relationship with them is the most important factor in my college choice.”

For now, the jump shooter with ice water in his veins will continue to work at rounding out his game for a big spring and summer ahead. When the AAU season is complete, do not be surprised to see the name Trevor Cooney high among the Class fo 2011 player rankings.
