UPDATE ON…TOM DRONEY

Sewickley Academy (PA) junior has Big East and Ivy League interest

Sewickley Academy’s 6-foot-6 junior guard Tom Droney continues to shine this season in Western Pennsylvania. Droney and his Panther teammates are 17-4 on the season and a successful season is on his mind now, more so than a college decision that at one time he thought would have been made by now.

“I have not really been thinking about my decision lately because I am trying to focus on school work and helping my team win the district and state championships,” Droney told NBE recently.

Droney has done little to persuade college recruiters not to pursue him. Prior to a 47-point performance in a 92-85 win last week over Our Lady of Sacred Heart, Droney was averaging 24 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds playing point guard for the Panthers. Could the Panthers be in his college future too? Or, will an Ivy League education win out. Those are two of his options, but not the only ones.

“Currently, I am looking at Pitt, Notre Dame, Davidson, and also Harvard,” said Droney.

While the interest in, and from, Pittsburgh, the Irish and Davidson has been mutual for some time, Harvard is a new entry and it has certainly caught his attention.

“Coach Amaker called me out of the blue which was really interesting because he is making Harvard into a contender and the academics are tremendous, and that is the most important thing for me,” Droney said of Harvard’s inclusion on his list.

With a busy schedule during the season, Droney has not had much time to check too much out in terms of colleges. He made trips to Notre Dame, Pitt and Davidson in the fall and will look into more trips this spring, once the season is over. For now, he will continue his quest for championships and improving his game. So far, he thinks he has made some progress in shoring up his overall game.

“I feel that this year I have really improved my outside shooting and defense,” Droney said. “I have been shooting a lot and I have seen great results.”
