Unsigned 2009 big man not rushing decision, Big East schools considered
DaShonte Riley is still on the board for the class of 2009. And, as expected with a 6-foot-11 prospect, the interest in his services is quite intense from several high-major programs across the country.
Playing for the USA Today’s Super 25’s 5th-ranked team, Detroit Country Day, Riley is averaging about 11 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks for the 12-0 team.
It was not expected that Riley would be open at this stage of the game for schools looking to add the much-desired element of height and athletic ability. Last May, Riley made a verbal commitment to Georgetown and it looked like he had the potential to be the next in a long line of top big men to play for the Hoyas.
His commitment ended as the November signing period passed and Riley did not sign his letter of intent, instead deciding to open his process back up. The list of schools he is looking at extends from one coast to the other and many places in between
“I’m looking at Marquette, Syracuse, Cal-Berkley, Virginia, Boston College and Oregon,” Riley told NBE recently.
As with any young big man, college recruiters pursue the player with what they have in mind what the young man can become as their development continues. Riley has made strides in his game during his senior season that will translate for a greater chance of success at the enxt level, and hopefully beyond.
“I think my conditioning has improved alot, mainly due to the fact that I worked with my trainer for about three months before the season started,” Riley said when asked of the biggest improvements of his game this year. “Ive also been playing with a little more confidence because my family always supports [me], no matter what.”
The Golden Eagles and Orange of the Big East can also expect to host Riley in the near future as he plans to make a campus visit to both.
“Yeah, I have a visit to the two planned,” Riley said. “I’m not exactly sure when they are.”
While Riley has a list of schools in mind, he is in no hurry to end the process as he wants to make sure he considers all the factors and finds the right fit before making his final decision.
“The plan is to carry out this process as long as necessary, but I dont know what may happen in the near future,” Riley shared. “I want to take my time and not rush into making a decision.”
With the combination of size, athletic ability and potential, the schools on his list will be certainly willing to wait out the process in hopes of landing a major spring signing period addition.
