Here is a quick look at Saturday’s Big East action:
It wasn’t the finest moments for the South Florida basketball program, but the Bulls did fight hard until coming up short in the last 90 seconds against Villanova. in a Big East conference match-up on Saturday afternoon in the Sun Dome.
The day just started off bad for Stan Heath’s program as Two USF Guards Were Arrested on Marijuana Charges (Tampa Tribune) just before midnight Friday. Although neither Anthony Crater (recent transfer) nor Mike Mercer (knee injury) were available to play, it was another distraction to USF, who just learned senior center BJ Ajayi was lost for the season.
Still, with all that, and star guard Dominique Jones fouling out with five minutes left, USF trailed just 60-58 in the final minutes before a 10-3 run by the Wildcats iced the game and the Short-handed USF Loses to No. 20 Villanova, 70-61.
Dante Cunningham had 14 points to lead the Wildcats. Reggie Redding added 11 and Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes each scored 10.
Augustus Gilchrist had 18 for USF with Chris Howard scoring 15, Jesus Verdejo adding 13 and Jones scored 11 before fouling out.

Marquette looked like they were going to blow the doors off of DePaul sprinting to a 48-34 halftime lead. While the second half was not a thing of beauty, the Golden Eagles Stay Perfect in the Big East (Journal Sentinel) with a 79-70 win.
Jerel McNeal had 21 points, Wesley Mathews added 20 and Lazar Hayward scored 16 and grabbed 17 rebounds in the win.
Dar Tucker led DePaul with 18 points.

It is over. UConn Ends Notre Dame’s Home Winning Streak at 45 Games (Chicago Tribune) with a 69-61 win in South Bend.
UConn Takes the Fight Out of the Irish (New Haven Register) other than Luke Harangody, and that was the key to winning. Harangody led Notre Dame with 24 points and 15 rebounds, but it took him 23 shots to get those 24 points and he was the only ND player to score in double figures.
Kyle McAlarney hit three early three’s, but was shut out the rest of the way.
The Huskies are Able to Halt Irish Win Streak (South Bend Tribune) with a balanced attack led by Jerome Dyson’s 15 points and Jeff Adrien’s 12 points and 19 rebounds.
UConn owned a 54-44 rebounding edge and limited the Irish to 33% (25-76) shooting from the floor. Yes, ND missed 51 shots!

More of the same for Rutgers as a Sluggish Start Dooms Scarlet Knights (Asbury park Press) in a 70-59 loss at St. John’s in Big East play.
It was the eighth straight loss for RU and Rutgers is Still Winless in the Big East (NJ.com) at 0-7.
SJU led by 11 at the half and RU got it to as close as two points late in the game, but the Redstorm held them off and scored the games last 9 points.
Paris Horne hit 12 of 13 shots and finished with 27 points to lead the way. DJ Kennedy added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
Mike Rosario, the lone Scarlet Knight in double figures, scored 16.
