BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (1/14/2009)

January 14, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Big East returns to action tonight after a Tuesday night off and our Big East Game Previews for 1/14/2009 were posted earlier today.

Also tonight, West Virginia steps out of the conference to do battle with in-state rival Marshall in the Capital Classic at the Charleston Civic Center. The Mountaineers hope to right their offensively struggling ship against their neighbor.

Also, Louisville’s young big men stepped up against Luke Harangody Monday night. Still, Harangody’s coach would not trade him for anyone in today’s game.

A few recruiting notes on a Villanova commit, UConn commit and Pitt and St. John’s are already chasing a 2011 NYC prospect. Seton Hall brings another transfer onto the ship and hopes he has the key to some in-state prospects in the class of 2010.

It is a big night in West Virginia as the Capital Classic takes place in Charleston between Marshall and West Virginia.

WVU freshman Darryl Bryant Looks to Put Poor Game Behind Him (Times West Virginian) and bounce back from his scoreless and foul-prone effort at Marquette of last weekend. Even though this game pops up in the middle of a brutal Big East schedule, WVU Is Taking the Game Seriously (Register-Herald) and WVU coach Bob Huggins Says a Capital Classic Win is Equally Important (Charleston Gazette) to the Mountaineers as it is to Marshall, dismissing the notion the game is more important to their in-state rivals.

Even though WVU has struggled in the past week and marshall is coming off a solid win over ECU, MU May be in the Right Place, But Wrong Time (Charleston Gazette) to face the Mountaineers.

Some recruiting tidbits:

St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts, Pittsburgh associate head coach Tom Herrion and Rutgers assistant Craig Carter were in the stands for a recent NYC PSAL showdown between Boys & Girls High School and the Lance Stephenson-led Lincoln High School squad. Despite a 37-point effort from ‘Born Ready’, Boys & Girls escaped with a 71-61 win.

Quickly garnering some major recruiting attention is 6-foot-3 sophomore Mike Taylor from Bys & Girls. Pitt and St. John’s are After Mike Taylor (ZagsBlog.com) and made it clear following the game in which the young sniper connected on five three-pointers as part of his 19 points.

Seton Hall has dipped into the transfer pool again to stock their roster as it comes as no surprise that Jeff Robinson is now Enrolled at Seton Hall (ZagsBlog.com).

Robinson starred on a St. Patrick’s squad where he teammed with current Villanova guard Corey Fisher for back-to-back New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles in 2006 and 2007. Robinson, a highly recruited G/F was named the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year as a senior before attending Memphis.

After a freshman season where he was behind several elite players on the Tigers’ national championship runner-up squad, Robinson had fallen completely out of coach Calipari’s rotation on a team not ranked in the top 25. Robinson, according to ZagsBlog, also considered St. Joe’s, Iona and Marist in the transfer process.

Seton Hall hopes the addition of Robinson, who should be eligible next December to suit up with the Pirates, helps them in recruiting of 2010 St. Patrick stars Kyrie Irving and Michael Gilchrist. For the class of 2009, SHU currently has one scholarship open and seem to have zeroed in on JUCO big men Jarrid Famous of Westchester (NY) CC and Quincy Hankins of Polk (FL) CC.

Villanova-commits Mouphtau Yarou and Isaiah Armwood have led Montrose Christian to a top ranking this season. The other night it was Yarou Leading Montrose past Titans (Washington Post) and the Benin native scored 23 points in a 70-53 win over TC Williams at the Comcast center.

Other Big East notes:

If Louisville is going to challenge for the league title as many expected, their guard play has to find some consistency and their young post players need to mature quickly and provide a Big East-level of defense and rebounding. It looks like their post position is rounding into shape as the Young Cards Duo Face Down Big East’s Best (Louisville Courier-Journal) as Samardo Samuels and Terrence Jennings make life tougher on Luke Harangody when things mattered most Monday night.

Next up for the pair…Pitt’s DeJuan Blair. With Jennings Growing by Leaps and Bounds (News Enterprise), UL might have a new weapon to go into Big East paint battles with.

The Cardinal late-game defense prevented harangody from becoming the first Notre Dame player to score 30 points in three straight games since Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley when he finished without a field goal in the last 10 plus minutes Monday night. Harangody still finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds and his coach Mike Brey Believes Harangody is Among the Best (Post-Tribune) in the game today.
