Below is an abbreviated version of our Daily News & Notes (1/12/2009):
Pittsburgh is Still #1 (AP) this week as the Top Ranked Panthers Pull Away in second Half (Observer-Reporter) in a 90-67 win over St. John’s.
Pittsburgh sophomore big man DeJuan Blair dominated the action with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 6 steals as the Panthers forced 24 SJU turnovers.
Blair Spoils Former Teammate’s Homecoming (Tribune-Review) as DJ Kennedy, a Pittsburgh native and former teammate of Blair at Schenley High School, scored 18 to led the Redstorm.
Over the weekend Pitt also got a boost on the recruiting trail as the Pittsburgh Recruiting Update reports on the verbal commitment of 2010 guard Isaiah Epps and the Rankings Lift Panthers Recruiting (Tribune-Review) efforts in both basketball and football. The NBE Report was also able to do some Catching Up On Adreian Payne and the elite 2010 prospect has the Panthers, and other Big East schools in the mix.

Adam Zagoria keeps on the theme of Pitt recruiting as assistant Tom Herrion was recently in attendence for a Lincoln (NYC) High School game against Boys & Girls (NYC) High school where Lance Stephenson poured in 37 points in a loss for Lincoln. According to ZagsBlog, Lance is Looking at Pitt, although we have yet to pin down exactly Pitt’s level of interest.
Also in Zag’s update is a link to a Northstar Basketball recruiting update on Michael Gilchrist, the class of 2011 stud from St. Patrick’s (NJ). Seton Hall, UMass, Syracuse, Villanova and Memphis were the schools rattled off by Gilchrist.

Hopefully this is the final chapter in the DeAndre Kane commitment saga as Kane is committed to Seton Hall (ZagsBlog) according to his Patterson (NC) School coach Chris Chaney who, via text, confirmed with Zags that Kane is still committed.
Zags also has a few other Seton Hall recruiting notes on JUCOs Quincy Hankins and Jarrid Famous, along with Memphis transfer Jeff Robinson.

West Virginia took one on the chin in Milwaukee over the weekend as they were humbled by Marquette, leading to senior Alex Ruoff questioning if some teammates care. Now, WVU Must Get to Work (Daily Mail) with rival Marshall up next before returning to the brutal Big East schedule.
For now, WVU’s Growing Pains Continue (Charleston Gazette) as they try to come of age as the season moves along. One team Bob Huggins hopes his team comes of age before their next encounter with is Marquette as the Next Meeting Has Potential for Fireworks (Times West Virginian) as Huggins took excpetion to some end of game antics of the Golden Eagles as having too much fun at WVU’s expense.

Here is a recruiting update on Ge-Lawn Guyn of the class of 2010, courtesy of the Louisville Courier Journal: Scott County’s Guyn Says UL, IU Interested. Louisville is currently showing a lot of attention with assistants Walter McCarty and Richard Pitino at some of his games and a chance that head coach Rick Pitino will be in to see him play soon as well.
