BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (12/9/2008)

December 9, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Three easy wins for the Big East on Monday night, but there was some excitement as Georgetown lit up the scoreboard and Justin Burrell tried to bring down the house for St. John’s. Louisville completed their Marques Maybin Classic sweep.

Tonight, a couple interesting games at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic with West Virginia matched up against Stephen Curry (and Davidson) and Villanova taking on Texas. Seton Hall also hosts California Baptist tonight.

Another day and another look at the recruitment of Dominic Cheek (expectations are he will stay closer to home today) and a look at ‘Nova commitment Mouphtau Yarou at his new high school.

Stop in Before, During and After the game for ALL the Big East Action!!

Last Night’s Action:
Louisville completed a three game run through the Marquis Maybin Classic in Freedom Hall last night with a 78-56 victory over Lamar.

The Cards Pound Boards to Complete sweep (Louisville Courier-Journal) as they beat Indiana State, Ohio and Lamar by an average of 32 points in the three games.

Last night, Samardo Samuels led the scoring with 15 points and Terrence Williams did the most board work with 13 caroms and Earl Clark, who was named the MVP of the classic, had a team-high 5 assists.

Three games in three days, even though the results were all one-sided, seemed to have a bit of an impact on the Cards. Louisville Was Not Sharp, But Gets Fifth Win (Courier Press) anyhow.

St. John’s took down NJIT, sending the 1-A bottom-feeder to their 41st straight defeat and Justin Burrell took down the basket in the 82-54 Redstorm victory.

The Storm Breaks Down Basket and NJIT (Newsday) with Burrell providing the highlight reel material with a monster two-hand jam that broke a suppport spring on the basket, the game had a 30 minute delay as a new hoop was put in place. After the break, it was much more of the same for NJIT who remains winless in 41 games.

The ‘Shaq-tastic’ Burrell (Five Boro Sports) finished the game with 14 points. Sophomore Paris Horne, who had the assist on the Burrell dunk, had a game-high 18 points for SJU.

Georgetown had little problem with Savannah State as the Hoya effeciency Leaps of the Page (Washington Times) in the 100-38 win.

Savannah State is coached by former Hoya player Horace Broadnax and he had no answers in the battle with his alma mater. Georgetown scored 100 points on just 53 field goal attempts, shooting 69.8% from the field as Georgetown Thumps SSU (SavannahNow.com). The Hoyas also outrebounded Savannah State by a 46-18 margin and where credited with 13 offensive rebounds…they missed just 16 shots from the field!

DaJuan Summers, Jesse Sapp and Austin Freeman each scored 14 points to lead the Hoyas.

On Tap Tonight:
Villanova will meet Texas in game two of tonight’s Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. The Wildcats have climbed into the top 15 of the polls, but Longhorns are a Yardstick for Villanova (Philadelphia Inquirer) as they represent the first nationally ranked team they have faced. Texas, on the other hand, has already been battled tested by Notre Dame and UCLA, splitting those contests.

Even with those other games under their belt, including the trip to Maui where they lost to ND, Texas is Pumped for Garden Trip (mySanAntonio.com) and a chance to play in the ‘mecca.’

Game one tonight at Madison Square Garden pits West Virginia against Davidson. Matt Whitfield, who will cover tonight’s action at MSG for the NBE Basketball Report, has a WVU-Davidson Preview on our WVU Team Blog Page and Adam Zagoria wrote an earlier article today on a West Virginia Homecoming at MSG for local products Devin Ebanks (also see Ebanks Getting Hang of College from Charleston Gazette), Kevin Jones and ‘Truck’ Bryant from the NYC-are and Da’Sean Butler and Wellington Smith from New Jersey.

Tonight a Big Apple and a Little Curry (Charleston Gazette) is on the menu for hoop fans as the Mountaineers will try to slow down all-everything Davidson guard Stephen Curry.

The only other game on the slate tonight involving a Big East team is Seton Hall hosting California Baptist in Newark.

Recruiting News & Notes:
As mentioned yesterday, the Dominic Cheek recruitment will come to a head this week as Cheek is to Announce on Friday (ZagsBlog.net) his college choice. The final contenders for his services include Villanova, Kansas, Memphis, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.

Yesterday, a source indicated Kansas was the strong favorite to NBE, today, another source indicates today that Villanova (where NBE always has believed he would end up) is the strong favorite. I guess we will just wait until the anouncement on Friday.

If Cheek was to select Villanova, he woudl be part of an outstanding class that Jay Wright has lined up that already includes signed recruits Maalik Wayns, Isaiah Armwooda> and Mouphtau Yarou, who is now playing at Montrose Christian alongside Armwood.

‘Mouph’ Draws Rave Reviews in Debut at Montrose Christian (Business Gazette) as his coach, Stu Vetter, calls the 6-foot-10 native of the Republic of Benin in Africa, ‘the most dominating big man’ he has had at Montrose. Yarou combines quick feet from his days as a soccer player in his youth with a strong body and athletic ability that makes the big man a top prospect in the class fo 2009.
