AROUND THE BIG EAST (11/18/2008)

November 19, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Wednesday on the court went pretty much as expected as Syracuse held off a gritty Richmond team, Cincinnati and Providence earned easy wins on their home courts and St. John’s fell to former conference rival Boston College on the road.

Of the court, there could be some trouble ahead for Syracuse star Eric Devendorf. Also, Notre Dame seems to have made progress in their search for both a power forward and #3 scoring option to replace Rob Kurz. Also a very good article on Mouphtau Yarou and his road from Africa to Villanova.

Tuesday’s Action:

Syracuse 76
Richmond 71

The Orange rallied from a 5-point halftime deficit behind the scoring of Jonny Flynn and Eric Devendorf to beat the Spiders in the Dome. Flynn scored 27 points and added five rebounds and assists to his stat sheet. Devendorf scored 22 himself, despite being charged with seven turnovers on the court.

The news is not all good for the Syracuse junior guard as WSYR in Syracuse is reporting that there is a Warrant For the SU Player’s Arrest as Devendorf is Investigated on a Harrasment Charge. Devendorf is accused of hitting a female student with a closed fist earlier this month.

Cincinnati 82
Texas Southern 51

UC Throttles Texas Southern (Cincinnati.com), inflicting most of their damage in the first half, racing out to a 51-24 halftime advantage. The intensity sagged in the second half enough to give Mick Cronin something to be irritated with his team with in practice tomorrow despite the 31-point win.

Sophomore Alvin Mitchell was the Bearcats’ leading scoring with 15 points and Deonta Vaughn added 12 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds to the cause.

Providence 100
Dartmouth 82

The Friars put seven players in double figures as they give Keno Davis his first coaching victory with PC. Sophomore Marshon Brooks led the way tonight with 18 points, he also added 7 rebounds. Randall Hanke scored 16 point and, along with Brian McKenzie, led the Friars with 9 rebounds as PC enjoyed a 53-33 rebounding edge in the contest.

Boston College 82
St. John’s 70

Just like the Big East tournament on three of the last four seasons, St. John’s failed to advance to Madison Square Garden in the 2008 Preseason NIT as regional host Boston College defeated the Redstorm 82-70 at Conte Forum on the NC campus.

Sean Evans and Paris Horne each scored 14 to lead SJU in defeat.

Other Big East Notes:

One of our main questions marks regarding Notre Dame before the season was who would step up and fill the role as the #3 scoring option behind Luke Harangody and Kyle McAlarney. While the role is still up for grabs, Options Grow for ND Behind the Big 2 (South Bend Tribune) and in their opening night win seniors Luke Zeller (career high 18 points) and Zach Hillesland took their best shot at earning the role for themselves.

SI.com’s Kevin Armstrong has an excellent article on Mouphtau Yarou as the Heralded Big East Signee Travels Long Road from Africa to Villanova.

Wednesday Night in the Big East:

Niagara @ Villanova, 7 PM

South Florida @ Virginia, 7 PM
