BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (9/30/2008)

September 30, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

As we have reported and referenced the last couple days, Talib Zanna Will Be a Pittsburgh Panther and Ron Bailey, publisher of i95ballerz.com, has an excellent article on Zanna and his game at our Pittsburgh Team Blog Site.

Speaking of i95ballerz.com, Ron has a recent article that caught my attention on his site, since I am a ‘child of the 80’s’ as he puts it, and that is Pony is ‘Back in the Game’ and looking to streamline their entry into Grassroots Basketball. I clearly remember Paul Evans’ Pittsburgh teams with Charles Smith and co. sporting their Pony sneakers back in the 80’s.

Elsewhere today some updates on Sean Kilpatrick, James Southerland, Mohammed Lee, Ryan Kelly, Durand Scott, Lavonte Dority, Elijah Johnson, Evan Smotrycz, Carson Desrosiers and Keith Clanton. More on the loaded Miami-Dade CC program, a couple updates on Nate Miles and Seton Hall and DePaul fill admin staff positions in their basketball programs.

Lots of good stuff today…

According to Notre Dame Prep coach Ryan Hurd, Sean Kilpatrick has set his first official visit for Providence and that trip is scheduled to take place in late October. PC has been in to see Kilpatrick this fall and he expects Cincinnati to be in as well at some point before the current recruiting period is over. Hurd also provides a status report on Syracuse commit James Southerland who has shown much more maturity as a player in his second year at Notre Dame. Hurd also mentions former NYC Rice HS point guard Mohammad Lee is playing well and has interest from Pittsburgh.

For the complete article, you can read it at ZagsBlog.net: Kilpatrick Sets Official; Southerland a ‘Beast’.

Mike Brey, the Notre Dame head coach, had an early wake-up call yesterday as he was in the gym at Ravenscroft (NC) at 6:30 AM to see a workout that included 6-foot-9 forward Ryan Kelly, the current object of ND’s recruiting desire. Ryan Kelly’s Recruiting is Getting Interesting (ZagsBlog.net) as he spent most of the day on the Duke campus attending classes, watching a workout and planned to spend the night.

Kelly has had official visits to Notre Dame, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest and he is also spending time entertaining and being entertained by Duke and North Carolina.

While the coverage of Nate Miles and the restraining order and subsequent arrest continues to be covered today in articles by the Hartford Courant (Wake Up Call in More Ways Than One) and the New Haven Register (Court Date Set for UConn’s Miles), the Journal Inquirer actually found time to do an update on Durand Scott as Scott Visits UConn last weekend and tells the JI about the trip and his plan to take three more official visits before deciding. Scott has already visited Pittsburgh and has plans to hit UCLA, Tennessee and Miami up next.

The article also mentions a new Connecticut target in 6-foot-3 guard Elijah Johnson of Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas (NV). The class of 2009 prospect missed a large portion of the summer season due to a broken ankle and is getting some renewed interest from some top schools across the country.

The Scott Hazelton Basketball School website has some Mass Rivals News on the recruitment of the AAU program’s key players. Recently, Syracuse head coach Jim Boehiem made the trek to New England to visit with 2010 power forward prospects Evan Smotrycz and Carson Desrosiers. Pittsburgh and Stanford were scheduled to come in last night to watch Desrosiers work out.

If you scroll down to the Basketball News section of The State’s (SC) Recruiting Buzz you will learn that power forward Keith Clanton will be visiting South Florida this weekend. Clanton is expected to choose from USF, South Carolina and Central Florida.

Chicago (IL) Foreman High School guard Lavonte Dority has added a Rutgers offer to his impressive offer list according to the Illinois Prep Bulls-eye’s Recruiting Update.

Bobby Gonzalez and Seton Hall have filled one open staff position with a name very familiar to basketball fans, especially those around New Jersey. Roderick Rhodes, a Former NJ High School Standout, Joins Seton Hall’s Coaching Staff (MSG.com) as an Assistant to the Head Coach/Administrative Assistant. Rhodes previously held a similar position at UMass under Travis Ford.

Rhodes was a high school All-American at St. Anthony’s under coach Bob Hurley. Now, he will hope his connection helps in the recruitment of current St. Anthony’s High School All-American Dominic Cheek and other New Jersey standouts.

DePaul has also filled an open administrative position and went with a former star as Dave Corzine Named to DePaul’s Staff (Daily Herald) as the Director of Basketball Operations. Corzine is a native of Arlington Heights (IL) and is DePaul’s all-time leading rebounder (1,151) and is third all-time in scoring at DePaul (1,896). After his senior season in 1977-78, Corzine was a 1st Round NBA raft pick and played 13 seasons in the NBA, including seven with the hometown Bulls. Corzine has been the color analyst for radio broadcasts of DePaul basketball games the last six years.

Jeff Goodman touches base on a JUCO team we certainly have our eye on as Miami-Dade is Loaded (FoxSports.com) this season. Coach Matt Eisele touches briefly on the Darnell Dodson situation. The team also has Memphis commitWill Coleman as well as former Marquette forward Trevor Mbakwe, currently looking at Miami (FL), Minnesota and LSU and former South Florida commit Dwan McMillan. Rounding out the potent line-up for Miami-Dade is former Alabama guard Rico Pickett and James Beatty. In our earlier Miami-Dade Recruiting Update, it was reported by coach Eisele that Beatty had Cincinnati and Providence interested in him.

Word through some local channels is that Dodson will be visiting Memphis in the near future and is being pursued quickly by John Calipari and his staff…
