NORTHFIELD MOUNT HERMON RECRUITING UPDATE
September 20, 2008 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Competing in the rough and tumble NEPSAC Class A division, Northfield Mount Hermon plays basketball at a high level while maintaining academic excellence in the classroom. With recent alumni scoring baskets for some of the top academic colleges in America, the 2008-2009 edition of NMH Basketball is more of the same for the Massachusetts prep school.
Leading the way for coach John Carroll’s squad is 2009 Louisville commit Mike Marra, a 6-foot-5, 205 lb guard/forward.
“Mike is among the elite three-point shooters in the country at any level,” coach Carroll stated. That point was never more evident than his performance last season when matched up against St. Thomas More and West Virginia commit Devin Ebanks as Marra poured in 36 points and hitting an amazing 10 of 11 shots from beyond the arc, including a brief barrage that left everyone amazed.
“At one point in the game we were down seven points and (in) 1:50 we were up eight after five straight three’s by Marra,” remembered his coach.
To compete in the tough environment of the NEPSAC, Marra will need some help and his NMH teammates comprise a very solid supporting cast, even if there are no other big time stars among them.
“It has been a busy start to the open period,” Carroll said. “Our Class of 2009 are very high end Academic kids. All of the Ivy League schools have been through.”
So far, 6-foot-8 forward Andrew McCarthy, a native of Boston, has verbally committed to Brown of the Ivy League.
“Our Class of 2010 has five players in it with three of them projected as high major kids,” coach Carroll notes. Those high major prospects include 6-foot-7 Hector Harold from Los Angeles, 6-foot-6 Laurent Rivard of Montreal (Canada) and 6-foot-2 Matt Brown of Barrington (RI). “We should see, and have seen, ACC, Big East, Big 10 and PAC-10 schools in the gym at NMH this open period,” the coach said.
