6’10 Gorski Going To Be A Keeper in 2011
By Ron Bailey
September 5, 2008 – When a 6-foot-10, 220 pound rising sophomore center with budding, yet legitimate center skills, bursts on the scene, high major schools come-a-calling. That’s definitely been the case with Matt Gorski.
Having seen Gorski at various times this past summer, his improvement with Triple Threat and Team Takeover has been drastic; besides becoming more effective in the post, in large part due to increased confidence, Matt is also quicker, now being able to establish his position and beat opponents to a spot, as opposed to simply bulling them over. Fueling that enhanced mobility in many ways has been another sport.
“I’ve been doing volleyball with my coaches and my high school” shared Matt of his cross training, as he believes “It’s helped me in my first step explosion, its getting my vertical up, it’s getting my quickness faster, it’s helping me all around. (Though not necessarily a current trend, volleyball training by post playing basketball players could be on the rise, with ballers like the NBA’s Donte Greene having proved its effectiveness).
Additionally, Gorski trains at his family’s Richmond, VA area home with his brother Nick Gorski, a 6’7” seventh grader who is already receiving collegiate interest. Their workouts include strength, agility and skill training, along with the inevitable brotherly battles, of which Matt jokingly claimed he predominately wins.
In terms of learning and improving his basketball fundamentals, Gorski credits “my AAU coaches and high school coach” Team Takeover’s Keith Stevens and Kenny Johnson, and Cosby High School’s (VA) Ron Carr, respectively. In Matt’s estimation their joint tutelage has him “coming through very well”.
A true post player, not a big man that fashions himself a guard, Gorski revealed he has been in the pivot “since I’ve been playing basketball, since like the third grade. It’s like going home really. It’s just what I do”.

Indeed, as Gorski can post low and spin, while also possessing a good feel for when to pass out of double teams– though nuances such as that are naturally still developing – rebounds, and is feisty. Going forward, Matt noted he plans to continue becoming stronger and will “get quicker” as well as “work on my outside shot”; though he seems to have a decently developing outside shot, Gorski wants to strengthen that aspect of his game, thereby increasing overall offensive effectiveness. Greater quickness and strength will do likewise, as well as allow the Class of 2011 center to become more of a feared interior presence.
Colleges have taken notice of his development and promise, evidenced by Matt sharing he’s receiving interest from many colleges, including Pittsburgh, Georgetown and virtually every ACC school. Virginiaa Tech, Virginia and James Madison have all offered this Commonwealth product.
“No, I just go out and play ball, do my best, and compete” answered Gorski, when asked if the increased recruiting spotlight has translated into more pressure to perform well. “I always compete. Whatever I can do to win, that’s what I do”.
Will he patrol the Big East? Stay tuned.
