BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (9/9/2008)

September 9, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

It is the beginning of another recruiting period as college coaches can hit the road and make in-home visits with their top targets as well as watching players workout at their school facilities. Bobby Gonzalez and staff are on the move on the first day.

Notre Dame releases thier schedule and it is a tough one. The Irish also will be giving plenty of attention to their #1 recruiting target this weekend. Providence picks up a commitment and could be close to another. Syracuse hosts a lot of talent for their Elite Camp. The whereabouts of former Louisville enigma Derrick Caracter is still unknown, at least with the school that thought he was coming their way.

First off today, we’d like to welcome Zach Smart to the NBE Basketball Report team. Some may be familiar with Zach’s work at Hoopville.net as he has covered northeast basketball for them recently. Zach will be a regular contributor that will hit NYC and New England for NBE.

For a couple of his latest Big East related stories, you can visit our West Virginia Team Blog Site for 21 reasons to leave the hustle and bustle of big city life for the peace and quiet of Morgantown, especially with Bob Huggins running the WVU hoops program.

Also, check out our Connecticut Team Blog Site for his excellent story on Stanley Robinson and the motivation ‘Sticks’ has to make it work at UConn.

Welcome aboard Zach!!

Now…onto today’s regularly scheduled program, after this brief break from a ‘sponsor’…

We will have more on this story a little later, but for now, here is the latest conference commitment as Michigan Guard Duke Mondy Commits (Providence Journal) to Providence and Keno Davis.

It is definitely a little bit of a change of pace this year for Notre Dame as the Irish Face a Difficult Basketball Slate (Journal Gazette). With a trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, which also features North Carolina and Texas in the tournament field, a road date with UCLA and a neutral floor contest at new Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis against Ohio State, this is a definite change in scheduling philosophy for Mike Brey compared to the last couple years. This schedule will grant ND maximum exposure and with home and home dates with Connecticut and Louisville on the Big East schedule, the Irish could be looking at one of the toughest in the entire country when things are said and done as Plenty of Hurdles Await Veteran Irish (South Bend Tribune) squad.

The Tribune also notes that this coming weekend Notre Dame will host their top recruiting target remaining on the board when Ryan Kelly, a 6-foot-9 forward from Raleigh (NC) makes an official visit for ND-Michigan football game.

College coaches are hitting the road to conduct in-home visits and to watch players workout in their high school, prep and JUCO gyms across the country. One player likely to see a steady stream of attention is St. Anthony’s shooting guard Dominic Cheek, an elite shooting guard prospect in the class of 2010. Cheek’s Home Visits Begin Tonight (ZagsBlog.net) with Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistant Scott Adubato meeting with Cheek and family members at the home of St. Anthony head coach Bob Hurley. Memphis, Kansas and Villanova (Sept. 23) also have scheduled home visits with Cheek.

As for Seton Hall, ZagsBlog.net is also reporting that assistant Dermon Player will spend his first day on the road watching Jarrid Famous, a 7-footer at Westchester Community College. Other players being pursued as priorities by the SHU staff include Karron Johnson, Arsalan Kazemi and Lamont ‘MoMo’ Jones from the high school (and prep ranks) and Kavon Lynch from the JUCO ranks.

Georgetown-commit Hollis Thompson is changing high schools for his senior season as Bay Area (CA) high school power De La Salle Basketball Adds Top Transfer (SF Gate). Thompson averaged 18.5 PPG as a junior attending Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He has moved to the Bay Area to live with his father.

After a brief stay at the Patterson School in NC, Nik Garcia Comes Back Home and is Enrolled in Evanston (Illinois Prep Bulls-eye). Garcia is expected to choose between Providence and Alabama in the very near future.

ZagsBlog.net also has a Derrick Caracter Update and, guess what, maybe he is not headed to Southern Miss, or maybe he is…nobody there seems to know.
