September 5, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

It was schedule day yesterday around the Big East conference. With the official dates and match-ups being released by the Big East, teams from around the league also were able to release their full slates for the 2008-2009 season.

Also, stories on new staff additions at Rutgers, Anthony Mason at St. John’s and some additional stories on the comings (Herb Pope, Keon Lawrence) and goings (Derrick Caracter) from around the league. As far as recruiting, a few mentions of Deandre Kane, Michael Haynes, Chris Colvin and Darius Smith to check up on.

Yesterday the Big East Released Conference Schedule and TV Dates for the 2008-2009 season. Plenty of articles today going over the schedules and TV appearances of the member schools. Here are the available links we have come across:

Seton Hall has had a busy week as the University announced transfers Keon Lawrence (from Missouri) and Herb Pope (New Mexico State) as official member of the program. JP Pelzman take a few moments off from his NY Jets coverage at his Green Machine Blog to recap SHU’s Busy Week and Promote a Good Cause.

Speaking of transfers, another highly touted athlete with some excess baggage is on the move as Derrick Caracter has finally left Louisville. Caracter to Southern Mississippi (ZagsBlog.net) to play for Larry Eustachy is the latest news on the Caracter saga. At least he is not in an effort to obtain one of those en vogue hardship waivers.

Here is a nice story from the Queens Courier on a true student-athlete, St. John’s senior Anthony Mason who represents St. John’s Hoops Hope for a successful season as he looks to lead the Redstorm up in the standings. Mason also gets the job done in the classroom, too.

Fred Hill Jr only has two years of head coaching experience at the college basketball level. Former Ohio, Nebraska, Robert Morris and Duquesne head coach Danny Nee has 26 years of coaching experience and 410 wins, now they will be working together at Rutgers as the Longtime Coach Nee is Hired by Rutgers (Asbury Park Press) as the Director of Player Development for the RU program. This is a very wise move by Hill to add the experienced Nee to his staff.

Scrolling down a bit in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s High School Notebook you will find that guard DeAndre Kane will now be enrolled at the Patterson School in Lenior (NC) instead of New Hampton Prep which was originally indicated. Kane’s father indicated that Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon was a big help in arranging the opportunity for Kane and Pitt will be one of the team’s recruiting the 6-foot-3 guard who played with DeJuan Blair (Pitt) and DJ Kennedy (St. John’s) on the Schenley state championship squad of 2006-2007.

The High School Confidential basketball Notebook of the Chicago Sun-Times has some recruiting news and notes on Michael Haynes, Chris Colvin and Darius Smith.

Haynes, who will attend Fenger HS this season, claims offers from Marquette and Iowa State with schools such as DePaul showing interest as well in the 6-foot-6 forward. Colvin seems to be liking USC at the moment with Big East schools such as Providence and Marquette being highly interested according to him. DePaul and Marquette are two of the schools that have offered Smith, who will be visiting Minnesota this weekend.
