2010 guard visited Pitt, will take trip to see Notre Dame next weekend

While the national recruiting websites do not seem to be giving Sewickley Academy junior Tom Droney a lot of attention, college coaches certainly are. When you have yet to begin your junior year of high school and your college scholarship offer lists consists of schools such as Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Virginia, Penn State, St. Joseph’s and others, maybe the should be paying a little more attention.

The way Tom Droney is approaching his recruitment, it could be over before many even knew it has begun.

“I look forward to sitting down and making a decision in either late September or early October,” Droney told the NBE Basketball Report in an e-mail earlier this evening.

The process is definitely underway, this past Thursday, Droney visited Pittsburgh, just 12 miles from his home, and really enjoyed it.

“I loved it,” Droney said. “I met chancellor (Mark) Nordenberg, Athletic Director (Steve) Pederson and spent the whole time with the whole coaching staff.”

Droney recently was measured at 6-foot-6 and weighed in at 186 pounds, impressive size for a versatile backcourt performer whose best position might project out to being point guard at the collegiate level. Droney has impressed observers with his ball handling and passing ability. He has a terrific feel for the game of basketball and is a very good athlete to boot.

Besides basketball, Droney will look to major in business when he enters college, his time on the Pittsburgh campus allowed for him to get a feel for life of a college student and what he will have to expect when he enters college from an academic standpoint.

“This Pitt visit really helped because I got a great feel of the campus life and many things beyond basketball,” Droney Said. “The people I met were all very nice and I truly loved the visit.” Droney continued, “another great thing about the Pitt visit was being able to sit down with the academic adviser and being able to go through the daily schedules of a student-athlete and pursuing a business major in college.”

Before the month of September is over, however, Droney will take a look at a few more college campuses to get something to compare his Pitt visit with.

“I also am visiting Notre Dame on September 5th,” indicated Droney. Later in the month, Tom will head down to North Carolina and take in a couple more college campuses, something he was originally hoping to do earlier.

“I have not visited Wake Forest or Davidson but I plan on doing so in late September,” explained Droney. “I have heard great things about those two schools so I look forward to visiting them.”

As we said, while you may not quite know who Tom Droney is, it might be time to study up on him, he could be deciding to commit to a college near you in the very near future.
