New Hampshire Prep School has impressive roster for 2008-2009
Tucked away in Wolfeboro (NH) sits the picturesque waterfront campus of Brewster Academy. Brewster has been traditionally known around New England for its crew and sailing programs, however, lately it has been the basketball program at Brewster Academy that has earned national acclaim in the competitive New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) environment. Coached by Jason Smith, who will enter his ninth season as the school’s head coach, Brewster is coming off a NEPSAC Class A Championship last March. With a loaded roster for this season, expect the Bobcats to once again be in the mix for a title.
Players come from far and wide to play at Brewster. With a roster of 13 players, nine different states, including the District of Columbia, are represented as well as Canada and England. The biggest name on the roster is summer sensation Thomas Robinson who has made the transition from Riverdale Baptist near Washington, DC to New Hampshire. He joins returning swingman Givon Crump, another DC native, and Baltimore (MD) big man Andrew Fitzgerald to form an imposing frontline for coach Smith’s Bobcats.
Coaches are already lining up to come to New Hampshire in September to make their recruiting pitches. For Crump, DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright is coming by September 9th and he will be followed by South Florida on the 10th and Rutgers on the 11th. Coach Smith tells the NBE Basketball Report that Crump will visit Oregon State the weekend of September 13th. ZagsBlog.net also reports that visits to Michigan and Rutgers, where he has already made an unofficial visit, will receive official visits this fall, although no dates have been mentioned.
Fitzgerald also has his share of Big East interest to sift through before he makes a decision, which some reports indicate may not come until the spring. However, a few schools in the Big East will look to see if they can convince him to decide earlier, such as Louisville.
“Coach Pitino is scheduled to be on campus on Monday, September 15th to see Andrew,” Smith told the NBE Basketball Report. “Andrew is also hearing from Seton Hall and Pittsburgh in the Big East.”
The Brewster Academy backcourt will also be strong with Chicago native Derek Tartt, Devan Bailey of England who has played well for the U-18 England national team in the European championships in past years and highly touted 2011 point guard Naadir Tharpe leading the unit. Expect Tharpe to be one of the most recruited players in his class, the recruiting race has already begun to heat up.
“(Naadir is) currently taking an unofficial visit to Georgetown with summer teammate Nate Lubick,” coach Smith stated. “Naadir visited Providence unofficially earlier this week.”
We will look forward to following the Brewster Bobcats as they look to defend their NEPSAC Class A Championship this coming season. In the meantime, we will be paying close attention to the recruiting news coming out of New Hampshire as Wolfeboro will be a popular tourist stop on New England for visiting Division 1-A coaches who will be looking for future stars in the fall. I can think of worse places to be than New England in the fall…
