BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (8/29/2008)

August 29, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

It is visit season and we have some news and notes on who is planning to visit where. We have other possibilities on visitors we will follow up with through the weekend and hope to have information on how their visits went after the long weekend.

Several other news and notes as we head into the last (unofficial) weekend of summer, inlcuding more on Ty Proffitt leaving ND, Michael Glover attempting to be eligible at SHU, Levance Fields rehabbing from foot surgery, Dominic Cheek’s recruitment and Gustav reeking havoc on SJU’s scheduled international trip for this weekend. We also have event coverage this weekend coming from the PEP Fall Classic in Chicago.

We also have a link to Jeff Goodman’s latest jam-packed blog entry where he talks with an excited UC coach Mick Cronin among other notes.

It is the opening weekend of the college football season and with many high school and prep schools around the country beginning classes this past week, official visits are starting to roll.

We have been informed that Marquette is on the prowl quickly with the scholarship vacated by Trevor Mbakwe’s transfer and has 6-foot-9 Minnesota native Sam Dower in for a visit this weekend.

Per our previous reports, Alex Oriakhi is at Connecticut for another unofficial visit, Carson Desrosiers is up at Syracuse for their elite camp and ZagsBlog.net reports that Locals Head to Syracuse Elite Camp also includes Paterson Catholic’s duo of Myles Mack (class of 2011 PG) and Shaquille Thomas (2010 SF) and Tobias Harris from Long Island.

Harris will go from SU to Louisville for Sunday’s in-state football battle between the Cards and rival Kentucky. In his Thursday Night Nuggets (Louisville Courier-Journal), Jody Demling reports that Durand Scott, Doron Lamb and Josh Selby are expected to join Harris for the game as Rick Pitino’s guests.

This is also the weekend James Padgett hits the road with stops expected in Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

Mick Cronin is singing the praises of incomign freshman Yancy Gates to FoxSports.com’s Jeff Goodman. Cronin Says his Frosh is as Talented as any in the Nation and hopes Gates will anchor a very intimidating frontcourt for Cincinnati. The frontcourt will feature former Texas recruit Mike Williams who missed all of last season due to injury, Western Carolina transfer Nick Aldridge, 7-foot sophomore Anthony McClain and could add 7-foot-2 center John Riek this December if academics and injuries are deemed OK.

The major question for the Bearcats will be at point guard where it looks like frosh Cashmere Wright and Dion Dixon will contend for the position.

Goodman also notes that Nate Lubick will visit Georgetown this weekend.

St. John’s got 10 pre-trip practices to prepare for a trip to Mexico this weekend. However, an impending Tropical Storm Nixes Red Storm Basketball’s Trip to Mexico (NY Daily News) and puts an end to those practices. With Gustav making a beeline for Cancun, the safety of the players was much more important than two games this weekend.

Since classes just began at SJU, freshmen Quincy Roberts and Ty Edmondson were only able to practice once with their new teammates while fellow freshman Phil Wait was out due to a knee injury.

The NJ Star Ledger has their story on Seton Hall Recruit Michael Glover Suing the NCAA, along with the Big East, in a last-ditch effort to get himself declared eligible to play at Seton Hall this coming season.
——————————————————————–

The South Bend Tribune has a story on Irish guard Ty Proffitt leaving the Notre Dame: Minus Minutes, Proffitt Exiting.

Pittsburgh point guard Levance Fields is temporarily on the shelf as he recovers from foot surgery. Pitt Point Guard Fields Has Surgery (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) on the foot he broke last December last weekend. The surgery was a success as the bone graft will add more stability to the foot he injured last season. Fields is not expected to miss any game action.

Adam Zagoria updates the recruitment of Dominic Cheek, a target of several Big East programs: Hurley Says Indiana Has a Chance. Big East programs mentioned in the article include Rutgers, Villanova, Connecticut and Seton Hall.

The P.E.P Fall Classic (Chicago Hoops) tips off tonight at Whitney Young High School in Chicago. Some of the top AAU teams of the Midwest and Big East targets and commitments are expected to be playing. The NBE Basketball Report will be in attendance over the weekend for the event.
