Texan forward coming east to visit Pitt August 30th
by Chris Dokish
J.J. Richardson of Hightower HS in Missouri City, TX does not come from Big East territory, but he has still been noticed by Pittsburgh, a school that knows a thing or two about big time sleepers.
The 6-foot-7, 238 pound combo forward played for a very good, very deep team last season so it’s no wonder he hasn’t been noticed before this summer. The Ohio native displayed a quickly developing skill set to go with his athletic and muscular body, and the Pitt coaches clearly see a player who is about to reach another level.
Richardson plays AAU basketball for Houston Elite, whose former member, Dwight Miller, is a freshman forward for Pitt this season. That appears to be an added benefit for Pitt, though Richardson has not yet talked to Miller about the possibilities of a reunion.
“I don’t have his number since he left for there,” says Richardson, “but he and I are very close. We used to work out together all the time.”
Pittsburgh will be the first visit for Richardson, who has a scholarship offer from the Panthers. Richardson also wants to check out Oklahoma State, Santa Clara, Wichita State, and San Francisco, but there is always a possibility that the first visit could also be his last.
“I’m going to Pittsburgh first on August 30th, next Friday,” says Richardson. “I’d like to see all five schools because I like them all but f I really like it there at Pittsburgh, and I feel very comfortable, then you never know, I could commit to them then.”
