BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (8/12/2008)

August 12, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Three Syracuse players were in front of a University Disciplinary Board on Monday for six hours regarding a case from last fall in which they were accused of sexually assaulting a female student. While the grand jury decided not to criminally charge the three, will the University impose their own justice?

Ryan Kelly will take his time in deciding a school, but will check out a big football game this September on the campus of a Big East school. Omari Lawrence and Kevin Parrom took the trip to Connecticut this weekend. Parrom’s school list is expanding while a Big East school still leads for Lawrence and he will visit another by month’s end. The were there on a big weekend as the Jim Calhoun Charity All-Star game took place and was like a family reunion of UConn basketball.

There is a look ahead to a brighter future for Providence College on the hardwood. Seton Hall’s immediate future might be brighter if Keon Lawrence is on the floor this season, but it might not be as clear cut as we originally thought. The Pirates also have a staff opening and there is an article catching up with Bootsy Thornton and John calipari has some ideas to help fellow coaches in the summer months.

Even though an Onondaga County grand jury decided two weeks ago not to criminally charge Syracuse players Jonny Flynn, Antonio Jardine and Rick Jackson after they were accused of sexually assaulting a female student, the SU Hoopsters Have a University Hearing (Auburn Citizen) and defended themselves during the course of the six hour hearing yesterday on the SU campus.

The grand jury decision had no bearing on Monday’s hearing, where the trio appeared before the board without lawyers to represent them. Syracuse officials now have five business days to communicate the panel’s decision in writing to all parties involved.

It might be a long few days for all with a vested interest in the case as SU Dispenses it’s Own Justice (Syracuse Post-Standard)

The finalists for Ravenscroft (NC) forward Ryan Kelly are (in no particular order, he stressed) North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame. The 6-foot-9 forward with a GPA over 4.0 will keep colleges and their fans waiting for a decision as Kelly is Taking his Time in Choosing a College (news & Observer). Kelly will visit Notre Dame the weekend of September 13th for the ND-Michigan football game and is the only set visit to date.

Adam Zagoria reports that Seton Hall, St. John’s and Rutgers, among others, are Trying to Get (Jarrid) Famous (ZagsBlog.net), a 6-foot-11, 235 pound C from Westchester Community College.

Zagoria also reports that, following a weekend visit to Connecticut, the recruiting picture for Kevin Parrom has been come a bit more cloudy than previously. Prior to the visit, it seemed that Parrom had a neat and tidy list of St. John’s, Marquette, Xavier, Rutgers and South Carolina, but now he is also considering UConn, Louisville, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Providence.

Parrom made the visit with friend and teammate Omari Lawrence. While Lawrence and Parrom Enjoyed the UConn Visit (ZagsBlog.net), Lawrence still lists St. John’s as his leader and plans to visit Louisville the weekend of August 31st.

When Jim Calhoun thinks about giving a player a second chance he has a very good past experience to draw upon. When coach Calhoun took a chance on a talented, yet troubled forward in Caron Butler, it paid off for both the University and the player. Now, Nate Miles enters Connecticut under a similar microscope, albeit more from a gypsy-esque high school path than a previous rap sheet like Butler. Miles would be wise to follow the path of the former UConn star and current NBA player as Butler is the Perfect Role Model for Miles (New Haven Register).

All in all, Saturday night’s Jim Calhoun Charity All-Star game was Another Night of Family Fun…Calhoun Style (New London Day).

Jeff Goodman, who is a Michael Phelps look-a-like, has an article on FoxSports.com taking a look at the season, and future, ahead for Keno Davis and Providence College basketball: Things are Looking Up for Friars.

Seton Hall is hoping that Keon Lawrence will be available for them next season (something discussed previously on our Seton Hall Team Blog) as the Former Missouri Tiger is Seeking a Hardship Ruling to Play this Year (Kansas City Star).

Seton Hall is down an assistant, again, as Steve Sauers Moves to Iona (ZagsBlog.net) for a spot on Kevin Willard’s staff, which also has former Bobby Gonzalez SHU staffer Shaheen Holloway.

Here is a Big East ‘Where are they Now edition on former St. John’s guard Bootsy Thornton: Former TCC Star Thornton Continuing Basketball Career Overseas (Tallahassee.com).

Not really Big East-centric, but John Calipari offers up some ideas on in August as the Time to Fix the July Problems (Commercial Appeal) that coaches have identified.

I for one completely agree with the 10-practice days for July. It does seem crazy that college coaches are not allowed any access to their players in the summer months to work with them as a team. I think the NCAA took steps forward allowing some practice time once school is in session, along with the individual workouts, but a summer practice regiment would be a nice benefit for teams and players.
