BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (8/7/2008)

August 7, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Luke Harangody has seen his life change with the increased notoriety of being one of the best players in the nation’s top conference. Norm Roberts has extended an offer to shore up his staff in the race for NYC talent. Rudy Gay was back at UConn and sometimes wondered if he left too soon. The court date for a couple WVU players has been moved. Keon Lawrence hopes to be on the court for SHU sooner, rather than later. Updates on Momo Jones, Dominic Cheek and Kevin Parrom can be found as well as the news that a Big East target is heading to the ACC in 2010.

Life has changed for Notre Dame star Luke Harangody, whether he is back home in Schererville (IN), near the ND campus or hitting the city of Chicago for a night out, everywhere he goes, he is recognized. Harangody is Now a Wanted Man (South Bend Tribune) following a season in which he was named the Big East Player of the Year. Now entering his junior season for the Irish, a championship contending club, he is no longer a secret in college basketball and the spotlight is clearly on him, from fans and opponents.

The South Bend Tribune also reports that the Irish will open the Maui Invitational against Tom Crean’s rebuilding Indiana Hoosiers.

As expected, it looks like Norm Roberts will look to the AAU ranks to fill an opening on his St. John’s staff. However, while many believed the direction would be towards Oswald Cross, a current AAU coach with the NY Panthers and former high school coach of current Redstorm player Justin Burrell, Norm Looks To Make Key Addition to Storm Staff (NY Daily News) by offering a position to New Heights AAU director Kimani Young.

Young has worked in the grassroots level for the last 15 years in New York City and his current New Heights players from the class of 2010 include Jayvaughn Pinkston, Devon Collier and Ashton Pankey.

Young has yet to decide on the position at last check.

West Virginia University basketball players Cam Thoroughman and Joe Mazzulla have had their day in court postponed and it will now be a September 11th Court Date for Mazzulla and Thoroughman (Daily Mail). Thoroughman faces charges of underage drinking, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Mazzulla faces charges of aggravated assault, hindering apprehension, disorderly conduct and underage drinking stemming from an incident at PNC Park late in July.

Rudy Gay may have moved on from Connecticut after just two seasons, but Gampel Still Home for Gay (Hartford Courant), a point he made when he returned to help out at Jim Calhoun’s recent Elite Basketball Camp at UConn.

As reported earlier at the Seton Hall Team Blog on the (developing) NBE Basketball Network, Keon Lawrence is Asking for a Hardship Waiver (ZagsBlog.net) to be eligible to play this coming season at Seton Hall after his transfer from Missouri.

Adam Zagoria also has the Latest on Dominic Cheek (ZagsBlog.net) as the elite 6-foot-5 shooting guard looks to be in no rush to make a college decision, according to St. Anthony’s head coach Bob Hurley. Zags also reports that Lamont MoMo Jones Will Not Attend St. Anthony’s (ZagsBlog.net) this coming season, keeping consistent with the school’s policy not to accept senior transfers.

It looks like Kevin Parrom has narrowed his recruiting focus as he prepares to attend South Kent in Connecticut after leaving St. Raymond’s of the Bronx. Parrom Has a Top Five (ZagsBlog.net) currently of Xavier, South Carolina, Marquette, Rutgers and St. John’s.

Parrom’s close friendship with Omari Lawrence, who continues to list the Redstorm as his leader, could be a major factor in his recruitment. Rutgers and Marquette seem to have other players of similar position already in their 2009 recruiting classes. Xavier has long been a leader with ‘Book’ Richardson, a former NY Gaucho coach, on their staff.

Tony Chenault was seeing some early interest from a few Big East schools, but the 2010 Philly Prep Basketball Star Committed to Wake Forest (Winston-Salem Journal) recently.
