CATCHING UP WITH NATE LUBICK

Versatile Class of 2010 forward gets a great summer basketball education

While college coaches flocked in droves to the St. Mark’s School in Massachusetts or to the NE Playaz games to see elite 2009 6-foot-10 prospect Erik Murphy, they all leave very impressed with his front court partner-in-crime, 6-foot-9 Nate Lubick, a versatile forward from the class of 2010. In fact, one day last October over 50 college coaches came to St. Mark’s to watch an open workout. Since that day, Nate Lubick has been on the college recruiting radar of some of the elite schools in the country.

During the AAU travel season, Nate Lubick runs with the powerful NE Playaz squad coached by former Duquense head coach, as well as top Big East assistant and former Boston Celtic coach, John Carroll. Being able to learn from one of the best coaches in the land is an opportunity that Nate cherishes and uses to his full advantage.

“Playing for Coach Carroll is a bit different because he just isn’t a normal AAU coach, but it’s like starting college two years early,” Lubick said. “He treats us the same way he would treat his teams in college or the NBA, everyone says stuff like ‘wow it must be awful playing for him,’ but I have really enjoyed it. He has really helped me with all parts of my game and has just helped me out in many different parts of life.”

Coach Carroll knows what it takes to be successful at the highest levels of the game. His teams, even in the AAU environment, learn to play with structure, share the ball, defend and take good shots. Evidence of that influence was very obvious early in July as the NE Playaz took home the Adidas It Takes 5 titles in Cincinnati, a highlight of the summer for Lubick and his teammates as they took down the powerful Atlanta Celtics, holding Derrick Favors to six points in the championship game.

Nate realizes his strengths and weaknesses well. “Probably my versatility, being able to play and guard multiple positions on the floor,” answered Lubick when asked to reveal the strongest aspect of his game. On the other hand, he was quick to point out the areas he wanted to address the most to help him realize his potential in the game. “Probably my strength and conditioning, making myself more athletic, so aspects of the game come a lot easier,” is where Nate puts in the effort to improve his individual game.

As mentioned earlier, schools are very aware of Lubick and have him high on their respective wish lists for the class of 2010. The list of schools recruiting him was too long to mention, but he has been able to take some visits to college campuses and will attempt to make a few other trips in the near future.

“I have been on visits to UCLA, Michigan, Virginia, Notre Dame and Georgetown,” Lubick said. “I may go back to Georgetown in about a week or so and I’m probably going to go to Duke and Wake (Forest) in the fall.”

For now, basketball and recruiting will take a back seat. After a hectic month of July with trips all across the country, Nate is just looking forward to kick back and relax for a short time. Once the fall contact period gets going, expect the college coaches to continue to make the trek to the St. Mark’s School once again and into Southboro (MA) to make sure the 6-foot-9, 225 pound forward realizes how much they want him to be part of their program. It will be a major feather in the cap for any school lucky enough to land such a fine, well-rounded student-athlete with a leg up on many players his age from his experiences playing for Coach Carroll. Nate Lubick is certainly one to watch in the class of 2010.
