Fast rising prospect clarifies previous reports of planned visits

by Chris Dokish

Thomas Robinson, the 6-foot-7, 220 pound combo forward that will play this season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, wants to set the record straight.

Robinson is perhaps the fastest rising prospect in the country this season and has elevated himself to at least a top 50 player in the country. Robinson is a beast on the court, but that belies his soft spoken demeanor off of it. That is, until he scours the articles about himself and finds things that he feels need to be clarified. Two such cases happened this week, one from this website and one from another national website.

“There was an article that just came out that said I was going to visit Kansas, Texas, and Memphis,” says Robinson, “but what I said was that those are the three schools that asked me to visit. I don’t know if I’m going to visit them yet. If they are one of my favorites I will, but I don’t know who my favorites are yet. I’ll know in a week or two when I talk to my coach.”

Robinson’s coach, Dwight Redd, confirms Robinson’s statements. “If he told any schools that he is visiting them then he’s doing it without me because I don’t know anything about it. I was getting a bunch of phone calls yesterday when that article came out so I called Thomas. That’s when he told me that what he said was taken the wrong way. I can tell you for sure that no decisions have been made on where he’s going to visit. In about two weeks we will sit down and go over the top candidates and decide on the three or four that he wants to visit.”

Robinson also commented on our article from last week when his coach was quoted as saying that he told Robinson, as he was coming off the court, that Pittsburgh got a verbal commitment from top 20 prospect Dante Taylor, and that Robinson said, “I guess that’s it for them then”.

Robinson, who clearly had to be reading Pitt message boards, responded to those who took his comment the wrong way. “People said I was afraid of Dante and didn’t want to go there. But that’s not true. I would love to play with Dante. When I said that, what I meant was that they were probably out of scholarships and they wouldn’t be interested in me anymore. But they told me that wasn’t the case and they still want me.”

Robinson, who says Pitt coaches told him he could play at the same time as Taylor, with Robinson at small forward and Taylor at power forward, would be very open to playing that position. While Robinson is known as an animal in the paint, he is also known as a player who could develop into an excellent small forward on the college level, especially for a team with the aggressive style of Pittsburgh.

Robinson went on to say that he talked to Pitt coaches yesterday and they also want him to visit, possibly in mid-September. Whether or not, that visit happens, nobody will know for sure, but Pitt is recruiting him as hard as anybody. “I talked to both Jamie Dixon and Tom Herrion yesterday and I assured them that Thomas was still very much in play, says Redd.”

Pittsburgh is not the only team in the Big East to covet Robinson, however. Georgetown, Louisville, Seton Hall, South Florida, and Providence have also thrown their hats in the ring, as has Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kansas, Memphis, Oklahoma, and many others.
