Talented combo forward sorting through Big East, ACC options
Tristan Spurlock has long been on the radar of many college coaches and basketball fans familiar with the mid-Atlantic region. The 6-foot-8, 218 pound forward sports a versatile game that can be productive inside and out and he looks to bring that versatility to a major college program beginning in the fall of 2009.
Tristan has impressed the NBE Basketball Report in the past with his athletic plays on the defensive end which included hitting the boards and blocking shots. He has also shown the ability to score from beyond the arc or attacking the rim off the dribble. It is no wonder college coaches line up to see him perform.
After splitting time in the past with AAU programs such as the Baltimore Stars and DC Blue Devils, among others, Tristan settled in with the powerful Virginia-based program of Boo Williams for this year’s AAU circuit. It was a move that Tristan can not say enough positive things about.
“It’s been my best summer! We’ve won as a team. We all share the ball and we have one goal in mind, which is winning,” Spurlock exclaimed. “The change was needed and Boo Williams gave me a chance to showcase my talent,” Spurlock said.
Next up for Spurlock and his Boo Williams teammates is a trip to Florida to compete in the AAU Super Showcase and nationals at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Milk House. After capturing the prestigious Nike Peach Jam Title to close out the first live recruiting period of the July, Boo Williams will kick off their second live period in a specially arranged Peach Jam Final rematch with Boston-based power BABC in a game nationally televised by ESPN2 being aired this Saturday from Orlando.
Playing the nationally challenging schedule that Boo Williams faces has helped round out Spurlock’s game. When he talks about the biggest strides in his game, it is music to the ears of his potential college coaches as he describes his biggest area of improvement.
“My defense,” Spurlock stated. “This past Peach Jam I guarded (in) almost every game the team’s best player and did a good job. I went from Jordan Hamilton to Hall out of Tennessee to Tommy Mason-Griffin. So my defense was very important this summer,” Spurlock said.
Once the excitement of the AAU season ends this coming week, Spurlock will turn his attention to recruiting and is set to visit Georgetown on August 6th. Aside from the Hoyas, Spurlock is also looking very closely at several ACC schools, including Virginia, where Boo Williams teammate Jontel Evans recently committed. Spurlock is a native of Woodbridge (VA) and the in-state school has long been an ardent pursuer of his services. Other schools getting a serious look from Spurlock include Clemson, North Carolina State and Wake Forest.
After playing his freshman season at Woodbridge High School, Spurlock enrolled at Montrose Christian and teamed up with classmates Isaiah Armwood (Villanova-commit) and Terrell Vinson to form one of the nations most highly sought after trio. After two years with Stu Vetter’s program, rumors have followed Tristan this summer that he might not return to the Rockville (MD) school. Although he is still enrolled, Spurlock is not sure exactly where he will call home this coming school year.
“I have no clue right now,” Spurlock told the NBE Basketball Report when asked if he will return to Montrose Christian next season. “I’m still enrolled. “I’m just letting God lead me right now…He lead my family two Boo Williams and look how that turned out,” Spurlock said.
Wherever Tristan Spurlock winds up for his final high school season, as well as for college his college career, expect his future coaches to be mighty happy with the well spoken and respectful young man, both on and off the court.
