July 9, 2008 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
It is certainly the busiest time of the year on the recruiting front and the updates are beginning to flow in continuously from all the events taking place. On Monday we posted our Lebron James Skills Academy Update, Part I and also a small review on some of the college counselor action as Jonny Flynn Explodes on the Competition with an impressive athletic display. We also had a profile on an emerging AAU program as the Petersburg Elite Prepares for July AAU Circuit home in Virginia, led by 6-foot-8 Cadarian Raines who has Big East schools interested in his talents and he has enjoyed a very good spring, highlighted by a strong performance at the Sothern Jam fest and NBA Top 100 camp.
Yesterday we also had stories on Oak Hill forward Glenn Bryant (who) Is Feeling Syracuse on the recruiting trail, a look at Georgetown 2009 commitment Dashonte Riley (who was) Impressive in Akron, a look at 14 of the campers at the Eastern Invitational and the Hoop Group Elite Camp School Lists of those considering Big East schools. A story from this morning showed that David Brown is Looking at Big East schools very seriously, including one he counts as his ‘dream school.’
On top of all the busy camp action, West Virginia landed a 2010 verbal commitment from a 6’10 Ohioan.
More news and evaluations from the Lebron James Skills Academy and the start of our Reebok All-American camp coverage will be found today and through the evening here at the NBE Basketball Report. Read on below for more news and notes regarding the Big East and it’s teams from the camps and news outlets around the web, it is another jam packed edition…
The Charleston Gazette has an informative column by Mitch Vingle as he covers a WVU recruit, Dispels a Rumor and a Few Curves around WVU.
The WVU recruit is 2010 center Storm Stanley of Ohio and we covered the latest 2010 West Virginia commitment yesterday in our Big East Recruiting Update on West Virginia. Stanley is a member of the Ohio Basketball Club AAU program along with Noah Cottrill, another 2010 Mountaineer commit.
Vingle also updates readers on the fundraising efforts for a new practice facility on the WVU campus and the loaded upcoming Harley Jam Fest taking place in and around Morgantown early next week. It is another quality event organized by the Hoop Group.
Also, Mountaineer forwards Da’Sean Butler and Wellington Smith have departed to tour there as part of an Athletes in Action all-star team and forward Cam Thoroughman is struggling in his rehabilitation efforts from knee surgery following last season.
The Evening Bulletin is a local Philadelphia media outlet that seems to be in its glory with the Reebok All-American camp making its home at nearby Philadelphia University, which is a wonderful facility for the event.
Today, the Bulletin has three excellent articles on the action:
With His High School in Limbo, Wright Competes at Philly U. This is the story of Mount Vernon High School shooting guard Sherrod Wright, who listed offers from Xavier, Virginia, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Oklahoma State and Massachusetts in the article, and how his mind is on the status of the sports programs at his high school. Budget cuts might force the community to shut down sports at Mount Vernon during the 2008-2009 school year unless private funds are accrued. Tough news for a program as storied as Mount Vernon’s.
Chenault in the Spotlight but Doesn’t Feel the Pressure. 2010 prospect Tony Chenault of Philly’s Neumann-Goretti High School has been well known since before entering high school. He is used to the attention and those trying to critique his every move. Chennault mentioned Villanova, Pittsburgh, Providence, Saint Joseph’s, La Salle and Virginia as having scholarship offers on the table, but he told the Bulletin a decision is not forthcoming as he wants to see who else becomes interested in time.
Reebok AA Camp Notebook. A couple Big East-relative pieces of information includes Prep Charter (rising) senior Jesse Morgan revealed his recruitment is wide open” and that Marquette, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Nebraska, Providence and George Washington are in pursuit, but have yet to make scholarship offers. Morgan is a 6-foot-5 G/F.
Also, 6-foot-10 center ,Aaric Murray of Glen Mills is being pursued by La Salle, Saint Joseph’s, Temple, Villanova, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

Villanova fans have a lot to be excited about with 2009 commitment Maalik Wayns as the Roman Catholic Star Continues to Impress (Philadelphia Inquirer) at every stop he makes and now will represent USA on the U-18 national team.

Here are Jody Demling’s Big East-related notes from his LeBron James – ay Three post on his Recruiting Blog at the Louisville Courier Journal:
Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie spent a good deal of time watching Oklahoma senior wing Terrance Boyd playing. The 6-foot-4 Boyd said UK has shown him a ton of interest since he “tore it up at the (UK) elite camp.” I had heard he had a good camp and he confirmed that with the “tore it up reference.” Kansas State and Oklahoma are a bit ahead of the pack, but UK, Kansas, LSU, Texas, Marquette, USC, Clemson and Tennessee are other schools that he mentioned
Louisville is getting involved with Seattle senior wing Aaron Dotson, who plays at the same high school as current U of L player Terrence Williams. The 6-foot-3 Dotson said he also holds offers from Gonzaga, Oregon State and LSU and is also hearing a lot from Indiana, Kansas and Miami (Fla.). His stock will go up after this week.
National Christian junior center Dante Taylor told me that Louisville has shown interest in his services, he also listed Pittsburgh, Kansas, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Memphis and Villanova. The 6-foot-8 Taylor won’t make a decision until next spring.
