Syracuse sophomore shows off athletic gifts at Lebron James Skills Academy
by Doug Ferguson
Akron — Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn might have been overlooked by some among a great crop of college point guards at this year’s LeBron James Skills Academy. The roster included Kalin Lucas (Michigan State), Jack McClinton (Miami U.), Curtis Jerrells (Baylor) and Patrick Beverly (Arkansas) along with other established point guards. With the exception of Beverly, they all had one thing in common: Jonny Flynn outplayed them.
Now losing out to Beverly was not a bad thing on this day as he was probably the best player on the floor for most of the day during the college player workout. Flynn however, showed explosion off the dribble and on the jump that casual observers of college basketball have not yet seen from him at Syracuse. Coach Jim Boeheim sounded like a proud papa in the bleachers raving to the other coaches about his quickness.
The most impressive part of the day for Flynn however came after the session ended when the players held an impromptu dunk showcase. Flynn was, dare I say, Spud Webb-esque. Curtis Jerrells, Demar DeRozan, and Sam Young (Pitt) all had some pretty good dunks in their bag. Its safe to say though, that if there was judging, Flynn would have won without a doubt.
