DC Assault Stand Out Gets it done on and off the court

Every now and then you come across a player that seems to be getting overlooked in this recruiting-crazed landscape of college basketball. Javorn Farrell seems to be just that kind of player.

Farrell is not a new name on the basketball landscape. Playing and starring for the powerful DC Assault AAU Program has allowed him to showcase his skills and talents on the court for several years now. In fact, the NBE Basketball Report has had the chance to see him play at the Pittsburgh Jam Fest, King James Shooting Stars Tournament, DC Assault AAU Tournament and the Rumble in the Bronx and he has always left a very positive impression on our contributors.

As the DC Assault Prepared for the 2008 AAU Circuit, Assistant to Director of Basketball Operations, Damon Handon, predicted to the NBE Basketball Report that Javorn Farrell would see his recruitment explode during the summer.

While Farrell certainly has some impressive offers and options at this point, the summer is just beginning to heat up and Farrell is still looking to state his case to more teams around college basketball.

“The colleges that i have heard from most recently is Minnesota, South Florida, UMass, George Mason, and Clemson,” Farrell told the NBE Basketball Report.

“I am planning on visiting a some colleges over the summer…I’ve talked with Tubby Smith about visiting Minnesota, I’ve talked to coach (Byron) Samuels at USF about visiting and I have an unofficial next week at George Mason,” Farrell said. He also mentioned UMass and Clemson for future visits.

Other schools that have shown interest lately include Virginia Tech, Maryland, Kentucky, Tulane, James Madison and Robert Morris.

On the AAU circuit, many players make their statement offensively and that attracts the crowd of college recruiters and the press clippings. Javorn would rather make ‘winning’ plays, the contributions that may not show up in the boxscore, but the hustle plays that only a coach can appreciate in person.

“This year I have not been scoring the ball as much as I used to, its not that I can’t, its because I want to help my team in other ways, that being playing aggressive defense on the opponents best player, diving for loose balls, taking charges, getting key rebounds,” Farrell explained. “But I have not lost touch with my scoring ability,” he re-assured.

Those traits are better judged in person by college coaches and Farrell and his DC Assault teammates will get that chance in college basketball recruiting’s July evaluation period when taking part in the Adidas ‘It Takes 5′, RBK Summer Classic, Adidas Super 64 and Best of the Summer events all being held during the live open period where college coaches can observe them in action.

Come July, Javorn hopes to show off a more developed offensive game, with improvements in a couple key areas to offer more balance to his arsenal.

“The part of my game that I am trying to work on the most this summer is being a consistent shooter,” Farrell indicated. “I am already a pretty good penetrator so a consistent long ball will help me keep the defense honest. I’m also working on my ball handling, right now its good, but i want it to get a lot better so it can be great,” Farrell said.

Even with the important July evaluation period around the corner, Javorn also could not help but look ahead to the upcoming season where he will team with one of the summer’s top breakout performers on the AAU circuit, Thomas Robinson forming a big-time 1-2 punch at Riverdale Baptist of Upper Marlboro (MD).

“Me and Thomas play very well together, the last 18 games of the season, which i played with Riverdale after transferring from Bishop Ireton, we bonded very well we became like brothers,” according to Farrell. “We have all of our pieces, I think that we can possibly do better than our 31-6 record last season.”

Javorn also touched briefly on the possibility of playing with Robinson beyond Riverdale Baptist. “I can really see that happening (playing with Robinson in college), not saying that it will, but we have gotten looks from some of the same schools, we’ve talked about it, but then again what high school teammates dont talk about playing at the same college?”

While Farrell’s versatility on the court allows him to possibly play four positions, it is his versatility as an all-around package on and off the court that will also receive a lot of attention from college coaches. Javorn is 100% a TRUE student-athlete.

“I’d also want my fans to know that im just not all about ball and no school, I get my work done then play ball.”

“I got a 1560 on the SAT, I took an IQ test and got a 115, so (I am not) just an athlete, I’m a student-athlete,” Farrell proudly boasts to the NBE Basketball Report.

Keep working Javorn, you are going places and we are going to enjoy watching you get there!!!
