SHERROD WRIGHT SEEING MANY INTERESTED IN HIS GAME

Mount Vernon’s next star has plenty of Big East interest

Ben Gordon, Keith Benjamin, Mike Coburn, Kevin Jones, Dexter Gray and Jonathan Mitchell are recent (and current) names that have come through Bob Cimmino’s Mount Vernon program and ended up in the Big East. Sherrod Wright could be the next one from the Westchester County power to play in the Big East conference as the 2009 prospect has plenty of high-major recruiting interest as he prepares for the all-important summer AAU season.

Recently, Alex Schwartz caught up with Wright to learn more about his game on the court and how his recruiting is going.

Winning eight of the nine sectional titles since the 1999-2000 season, four PHSAA state championships and three NYS Federation crowns, the Mount Vernon program continues to win and produce high-quality talent for the college game. Last year’s team featured 6’7 Kevin Jones as the highly visible star, but his 6’3 teammate, Sherrod Wright, staked his claim locally and nationally as one of the top players in the class of 2009.

Wright’s play this season really impressed his head coach, who heaped on some of his highest praise in the direction of Wright, comparing him to Ben Gordon when discussing a dominant 31-point performance by Wright with the Journal News after a win over Long Island Lutheran.

Now, playing with the NJ Playaz on the AAU circuit, Wright will look to convince people nationally that he is the next great one to come out of Mount Vernon.

Colleges have noticed as Wright indicated to Schwartz that he has offers from UMass, Georgia Tech, Xavier and Virginia with interest coming from Big East schools such as Marquette, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and Seton Hall among other teams from the ACC, Big 10, etc.

With no leaders indicated to Schwartz, Wright did share that one school has always had a special meaning to him. “My dream school was North Carolina because I was born there,” indicated Wright. Even with impressive offers and top schools interested, Wright is in no hurry to commit. “Oh no, no. . . . I think I’m most likely, knowing me, I’m going to commit late.”

Sherrod was also kind enough to break down his game for Schwartz:

Biggest Strength: “My mid-range (game) and my slashing ability, my ability to create for my other teammates and for myself.”

Biggest Weakness: “I’d say my handle (is) my biggest weakness and long-range (game) a little bit, but . . . mainly (my) handle, but I’m getting stronger with that…”
