Elite Junior Still Sorting Out College Interest
By Chris Dokish
Class of 2009 top 15 prospect Dominic Cheek has another year of high school left at St. Anthony’s in Jersey City, NJ, but that doesn’t mean that eager coaches and fans aren’t clamoring to have him on their team. Unfortunately for them, however, Cheek is not yet close to a decision. In fact, he hasn’t even really concentrated much on who the major contenders would be.
“More schools contact me every day,” says the 6’6” 185 pound Cheek. “It’s hard to think about who my favorites are when there are more schools coming in every day. I have to sit down and talk with Coach Hurley about it.”
Coach Hurley, of course, is legendary coach Bob Hurley, and it’s part of his method to sit down with each prospect and their family in his office to discuss his college choice.
“I haven’t done that with him yet,” says Hurley, “but it will be soon.”
“I would prefer to go away a little,” says Cheek, “but of course my family doesn’t want me to go too far away. I would go far away, though, if that’s the best place for me.”
When asked which schools he would definitely like to visit, Cheek said Texas and Florida. He also has no preference to a particular conference or to a position, since he could play both shooting guard and small forward.
As for his teammates, he says Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas), Mike Rosario (Rutgers), and Travon Woodall (Pittsburgh) all do factor in his recruiting in one way.
“All of those guys try to recruit me to their team every day,” laughs Cheek, who says he is equally close with all of them. “I have nothing against any of those dudes and I would play with them, no problem.”
The list will not be dwindled down until Cheek’s meeting with Hurley, however. Until then, Big East schools who could make the cut are Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Georgetown, Villanova and Syracuse. Outside of the Big East, some of the nation’s top schools such as Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Kansas are also contending.
The NBE Basketball Report will continue to monitor the recruitment of Dominic Cheek as more and more schools make their pitch to lure the talented player to their program.
