The University of Pittsburgh basketball team’s run of bad luck when recruiting locally continued last night as 7’0” McKeesport (PA) HS center Zeke Marshall turned down a Pitt offer to play at Akron.

“He committed to them last night,” confirms his mother Nicole Bozeman. “There were three reasons, but maybe the main reason was because he developed such a great relationship with the staff. He really liked them all a lot. Secondly, it was for academic reasons. He loved their computer program and that’s what he wants to major in. Also, he was not a fan of Pitt’s campus. He wanted a campus feel, in the city, but not right in the city. Akron was just a good for him. Pitt’s campus didn’t fit his personality.”

Many fans may be shocked at the decision since the other two top contenders were Pitt and Xavier, both powers nationally, but Mrs. Bozeman says she is fine with the decision.

“I always said that it’s his life and he has to go where he fits best,” she says, citing the fact if her son was ever an NBA quality player, they would still find him in Akron. “And if he isn’t good enough for the NBA some day,” she says, “he will still have a chance to have his own software company, which is his goal.”

“He’s an exceptional student and person and he did what’s best for him,” says Mrs. Bozeman. “He even turned Harvard because it wasn’t right for him, so that just shows that he knows what he wants and what he wanted was to go to Akron.”
