The 2008 Under Armour Capital Classic took place Sunday afternoon at the Comcast center on the campus of the University of Maryland. In the featured contest, the US All-Stars, led by Duke-bound Olek Czyz, stormed past the Capital All-Stars, 123-85. Czyz took home the game MVP honors in the 35th edition of the Capital Classic, scoring a game-high 23 points.
Brian Crownover stopped by on his way home from the Boo Williams invitational and provided a brief rundown of the Big East-bound players who participated in this year’s event. As usual, the local Georgetown Hoyas were represented with several recruits, including Chris Braswell, Henry Sims and Jason Clark. Roscoe Davis, headed to West Virginia and Syracuse-bound Kris Joseph also took part in the all-star contest.
Read below for the Big East player summaries from Brian Crownover, lead recruiting analyst for CAAInsider.com.
Chris Braswell (12 points, 11 rebounds)
Chris already has a college build. He has a developed all around game, but doesn’t stand out in one area. He can score inside, but seems most comfortable getting there by driving from the wing. With his size, he can be tough to stop inside. Chris had a nice drive and hook shot on one play. He had a couple offensive rebounds and put backs. Chris stepped outside and hit a jumper too. He does like to hang around the perimeter (0-4 on 3’s) a lot and I’d like to see him attempt to utilize his size more in the post. He was just 3-13 from the floor, but managed to convert well at the line (6-8).
Henry Sims (17 pts, 7 rebounds, 5 blocks)
This lanky big man makes a ton of athletic plays. He really plays above the rim. He blocked shot after shot after shot in this one. He threw down quite a few dunks too. He does need to show more of a post game than he has in the last two weekends. Henry did pull down quite a few rebounds. He did step outside and bury a 15 foot jump shot. Sims was 8-10 from the floor and 1-4 from the foul line.
Jason Clark (16 pts, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 turnovers)
This bouncy guard made some nice plays. He can get into the lane very quickly. Jason sliced around the defense and used a scoop finish on one play. He also banked in a pull up jumper with a foul for a three point play. Jason did hit a fade away jumper, but was quiet from the perimeter for the most part. Because of his speed, he draws a lot of contact and will have to get stronger to take all the abuse at the next level. He also seems to score in spurts and then will go quiet for a stretch. Jason had a steal and alley oop assist too. On the afternoon, Clark was 5-13 from the floor, hitting 1-4 from beyond the arc. He did go 5-7 from the line.
Roscoe Davis (10 pts, 5 rebounds)
Roscoe is another long an athletic future Big East player. He had a couple blocks and a very athletic rebound. He had trouble going inside against the even longer Wake Forest bound Ty Walker. Roscoe will have to get stronger. He missed on a couple put back attempts. He did have an alley oop assist and a transition dunk. Added strength will make him a much more effective finisher as he was just 4-13 from the field.
Kris Joseph (9 pts, 5 rebounds)
Kris had a more productive game that last weekend, but still was relatively quiet. He opened with a transition dunk and followed that up by knocking down a three pointer off the dribble (1-2 from the arc in the game). He did have a nice drive and spin move, but was unable to convert. Kris also added in an offensive rebound put back and another transition bucket. Kris finished 4-9 from the floor in the game.
