Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistant Scott Adubato were among
those on hand Monday night for St. Anthony’s 84-71 win over Paterson
Catholic in the North Non-Public B semis at St. Anthony.
Rutgers head coach Fred Hill and assistant Darren Savino; Villanova
associate head coach Brett Gunning; Fordham assistant Jared Grasso; and St.
Peter’s assistant Kyle Anderson (whose 6-5 8th grade son Kyle Jr. is headed
to Paterson Catholic) were also in the gym.
After Jordan Theodore posted 15 points and 9 rebounds in his final game,
Gonzalez had a few words about his future point guard.
“I’m very proud of Jordan because playing against St. Anthony in this gym is
very difficult,” Gonzalez said. “And he showed a lot of character, him and
his team. They never gave up. They made it respectable
“I thought Jordan played very hard. He got in a little bit of foul trouble,
but at 15 points, nine rebounds, he’s going to be perfect for our system.
He’s exactly what we need, a guy that can push the ball up, get us in our
stuff, take some pressure off Eugene Harvey, another ball-handler. WE can’t
wait to get him.
Asked if he planned to play Theodore and Harvey together, Gonzalez said:
“Absolutely, I can see (Theodore), Eugene and Paul Gause on the floor
creating havoc. Granted they’ll be small, but it will be like a pinball
game, they’ll be all over the place. He’s perfect for us. He’s frenetic and
that’s exactly how we play.”
**Seton Hall also expects to land BOTH 6-5 SG Chris Turner of Humble (Texas)
Christian Life Center and 6-8 PF Gary Flowers of CHipola (Fla.) College.
Turner (left) committed to Oregon State but is waiting to see who the
program’s new coach is. Flowers is playing in the Florida JUCO playoffs and
could commit when his season ends.
That would give SHU a class of Theodore, Turner, Flowers and Robert “Stix”
Mitchell, who is sitting out the year after transferring from Duquesne. The
Pirates also have one more ship to play with.
**Hill and Savino saw Rutgers-bound guard Mike Rosario of St. Anthony finish
with 16 points, including one 3-pointer and a couple of emphatic dunks.
Rosario, a McDonald’s All-American, will play at the RAC Wednesday night
when St. Anthony meets St. Patrick in the North final at 8 p.m. Rosario had
32 at the RAC during a game in the PrimeTime Shootout.
**The Fordham coaches watched two Fordham-bound players from St. Anthony,
Jio Fontan of Paterson and Alberto Estwick. Fontan played a near flawless
game running the point, finishing with 12 points and 8 assists. Read my
in-depth feature on Fontan and Pittsburgh-bound teammate Travon Woodall
HERE. Woodall finished with 13 points and three 3-pointers.
**All the coaches were impressed with 6-5 St. Anthony junior Dominic Cheek,
who scored 13 of his team-high 18 in the second half and also wowed the
crowd with a couple dunks. Villanova, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Wake Forest and
others are involved with Cheek.
**The PC sophomores are young, but talented and Fuquan Edwin (17 points) and
Trevor Clemmings (4 pts, 9 rebounds) both hold offers from Rutgers and Seton
Hall. Jayon James (18 pts) holds offers from Seton Hall and Fordham and
Fordham has also offered with junior Lance Brown and sophomore Shaq Thomas.
