August 7, 2008 (PM Update)
Since we had some rare free time…we felt we would add another update…
One of the most highly recruited players from the spring has cut his list down. Iman Shumpert Names Three Finalists (Cracked Sidewalks) and Marquette makes the cut, but Notre Dame does not, among Big East schools. North Carolina and Georgia Tech are also finalists for the 6-4 combo guard from Oak Park/River Forest star who would continue the well-regarded tradition of Chicago-area talent migrating to Milwaukee to showcase their talents, ala Dwyane Wade. Shumpert is expected to be on the Marquette campus today for another unofficial visit as the Golden Eagles are preparing for their trip to Vancouver next month with a short series of NCAA-sanctioned practices. Shumpert also expects to take official visits to all three finalists this fall before making a decision.

Van Coleman answered some Big East-related questions in his Monday chat. Here are some of the details from his Weekly Chat at CSTV.com:
Q: Recruit Stock Watch – based on summer play, who are you buying, who are you selling: Lance Goulbourne, Kevin Jones, Mookie Jones, or Quintrel Thomas?
A: Mookie Jones. Just a step ahead of all the others, who are Top 100-Top 150 kids. Mookie may be in our Top 50 based on his play at the AAU Nationals. He was stellar, and was clearly the guy his team went to when the game was on the line.Q: There is a need for post players at West Virginia that can play Huggy ball so I was just wondering who he may be looking to bring in with the 2008 class.
A: Well, they just grabbed a tough guard in Darryl ‘Truck’ Bryant who could very well overachieve in Huggins system. Should be a good fit for Truck. They like Allan Chaney who’s really blown up, Quintrell Thomas is another. We’ve got them pegged for Lance Goulbourne. I know they were at Xavier Gibson’s games. Ralph Sampson may be someone they look at. He may have to dip into the JUCO ranks and really go that route. Between now and next week, we’ll try and come up with a more definitive list.
Q: We’ve got a question from a Minnesota fan on Eloy Vargas and if they can get him?
A: Pitt, Oklahoma, Florida, Miami, Indiana, Minnesota, Clemson, Virginia and South Florida is the list we got from him at the AAU Nationals. Tubby was recruiting him when he was at Kentucky, but it looks like a long shot right now. It’s a long list.
Q: How has Jeronne Maymon looked this summer? What is up with his recruitment?
A: He’s athletic, he’s long, does a lot of nice things from the 15-foot area, he’ll have his share of Big Ten looks for sure. Wisconsin, Marquette, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota and Florida State are what we have him listed with.
Q: Last left-over from last week is about Mike Rosario and whether he’s more than just a shooter?
A: Based on what I saw, yes. He penetrates, he passes well, can run the show if asked to – he’s more of a combo right now but may down the road be a point and will thrive in a 3-guard offense. He can do more than shoot, he showed that at NBA Players Camp, Rbk U and in Vegas.

Adam Zagoria had an update today that Tyreke Evans Will Head to Brazil (zagsblog) Aug. 13-20 as part of the adidas Nations program. After returning to the U.S., ‘Reke will participate in the Boost Mobile Classic in Rucker Park Aug. 24. That weekend he also plans to make an unofficial visit to Seton Hall. The earlier reported ‘decision darte’ for Evans of November 12th is not set in stone, according to his brother Reggie, who confirmed that Louisville and Villanova remain Tyreke’s top two options.
And speaking of Seton Hall, Zagoria reports that William Paterson coach Jose Rebimbas, a Seton Hall alum, who has guided the Pioneers to two Division III NCAA Final Fours, is apparently not in the mix for the coaching vacancy left by the departure of Geoff Billet to CBA. Tony Bergeron, Tyreke Evan’s coach at American Christian (Pa.), also told ZAGSBLOG he is out of the running. Jerry Walker, the former Pirate player is a known candidate, after that, nobody is quite sure what is up the sleeve of Bobby Gonzalez.

Mike Waters’ final installment on life on the road in July for Syracuse assistants appeared today in the Syracuse Post-Standard: Finally, A Little Rest for SU’s Road Weary. It was an entertaining three part series.
On a related note, the Philadelphia Daily News’ Dana Pennett O’Neil had a similar article on the miles logged in Vegas as the columnist tracked Villanova assistant head coach Brett Gunning was their cordial host for 5 days: Viva, GPS! Making AAU Rounds in Vegas.
